Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Mike Shula believes Cam Newton is ready to take a big step forward entering year three, providing he can manage the ups and downs that come with the job. Newton has shown that he has the physical skills to be an elite quarterback. Now, Shula wants to see him take a step forward emotionally, specifically when it comes to handling adversity. ''Probably the biggest thing for him is maintaining that balance,'' Shula said. ''Because everything around you during the football season is going to be up and down.'' At times TV cameras have caught Newton moping on the sidelines and even teammate Steve Smith has called him out in the past for sulking on the sidelines. Newton wasn't at the team's rookie minicamp this weekend, but has said in the past he needs to control his emotions and become a better team leader because he knows his teammates are watching him. ''The more you can continue to stay on an...

Carolina Panthers OC Mike Shula: Cam Newton must find balance

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton spent the first 75-percent of his 2012-13 season fighting off the perception that he was a selfish malcontent with zero leadership skills. Poorly executed post-game press conferences and sideline sulk fests sent the wrong message to observers and the Panthers fan base. For all of his talent, Cam Newton appeared to be hopping onboard the...

Rivera likes what he sees from rookie DTs

Ron Rivera didn't anticipate the Carolina Panthers would use their first two draft picks on defensive tackles. Then again, he didn't expect Purdue's Kawann Short would be there in the middle of the second round. Rivera says the Panthers had a first-round grade on Short, so when he fell to the 44th spot overall they wasted no time turning in their pick - even after taking...

Carolina Panthers Sign LB Ben Jacobs

The Carolina Panthers have signed LB Ben Jacobs. Jacobs last played in the NFL during the 2011 season with the Browns. Then, his rookie year, he saw action in five games but had his year cut short due to a concussion. In those five games, he failed to record a tackle. Ben was not in the NFL during the 2012 season and is likely just a body for training camp.   The post Carolina...

Panthers Want Cam Newton to Be More “Emotionally Balanced”

In layman terms they want Cameron to stop being in his feelings all the time, but they had to say it in a way that was politically correct. Here is the quote. One of the areas of focus this offseason for Panthers offensive coordinator Mike Shula is to get Newton to keep things on a more even keel emotionally when things might not be going as well as hoped. “Probably the biggest...

Rivera, Panthers pleased with rookies in camp

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The schemes were basic and the competition merely a shell of whats to come, but the Panthers were pleased with what they saw out of their five drafted rookies this weekend in their rookie mini-camp. Our draft picks really came in and showed well. Very pleased with some of the quickness that we saw from the defensive tackles, head coach Ron Rivera said. Thought...
