Danny O’Neil of MyNorthWest.com believes that the addition of Percy Harvin could force the Seahawks to release Sidney Rice after this season.
To understand Seattle’s plan for Harvin, you need to look at the structure of his contract. He counts $4.9 million against the Seahawks’ cap this year, but that charge balloons to over $13 million in 2014. That means he’ll jump toward the top of the payroll next season, which could squeeze Rice out of his current deal barring a huge season.
Rice is scheduled to make $8.5 million in 2013 and 2014. The Seahawks can afford to keep him around for this season, but he’s going to have to prove to Seattle that he’s worth it for them to not release him after this season.
