Looking at the short list of teams that need wide receivers after Week 2, it becomes painfully obvious Chad Johnson, formerly known as Chad Ochocinco, will most likely not find a home in 2012.

After being cut by the News England Patriots shortly before training camp, he was picked up by the Miami Dolphins.

Unfortunately for Johnson, he didn’t last very long in Miami due to a lackluster performance in his only preseason game and a domestic violence charge he received when he was accused of head-butting his wife, Evelyn Lozada.

The misdemeanor couldn’t have come at a worse time either, because the NFL recently joined in a public service announcement campaign about violence against women.

Before Week 2, I would have said the Dolphins, Rams, Seahawks and Raiders were teams that need help at the wide receiver position, but after a solid performance by Rams receivers, you can cut that shorter list even shorter.

The Dolphins can also be taken off the board because of obvious reasons. The Seahawks don't look like a probable destination since they already tried this experiment with Terrell Owens, a receiver similar to Johnson, and that didn’t work out very well.

That leaves the Oakland Raiders, who have a veteran quarterback that Johnson is very familiar with and a number of young receivers who could use a veteran on the roster to learn from.  Only time will tell if Oakland is ready to give Johnson the second chance that most feels he deserves.

Johnson also faces another issue with the number of quality receivers in free agency with him. Jabar Gaffney, Donte Stallworth, and Deion Branch (just re-signed by New England today) were all released by the Patriots, who apparently keep only exceptional wide receivers that can easily grasp the complicated New England offense, so they’ll most likely get an opportunity elsewhere in the league before Johnson.

While Chad’s career has slowly been on the decline and he has been known as an unnecessary distraction in locker rooms, he still has something left to offer a needy team.

Nice guys should always get second chances, especially when it’s a first offense and many before him have gotten that chance.  The only thing that Johnson can do from here is stay in shape and keep his phone close in case the phone rings, otherwise Chad may have to look to other leagues if he wishes to keep his football career alive and relevant.
