We're finally one day away from the Jets' season opener, as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers travel to MetLife to take on that "terrible Jets squad."
Well, this Jets squad sure looks better on paper (and in the preseason), than the one that was on the field in 2012. And Sunday will begin the real determination of that.
The Jets are young, up-and-down the roster, best evidenced by rookie QB Geno Smith. And while it's hard to imagine a scenario where the Jets re-live their AFC Champsionship Game entrance, it's not far-fetched to think they will be better than the expectations that are being given to them.
ESPN's analysts have the Jets as the worst team in the NFL. Other networks place the Jets in-and-around the same spot. Worse than the Raiders—a team which is fielding QB Terrelle Pryor behind a 4th-string O-Line? Or the Jags?
OC Marty Mornhinweg's offensive plan gives the Jets offense a chance to score some points. While there aren't any true playmakers on offense, at least at the moment, Mornhinweg's West Coast Offense has been known for helping QBs look better on the field. This is acheived by wide receivers getting more space in their routes, a product of the system.
Sunday - Week 1
The Jets will be facing a Bucs squad which is on the rise, but may or may not 'be there' yet. QB Josh Freeman has been very vanilla, now entering his fifth season. The past three seasons he was voted as a captain by his teammates, but this year, he failed to earn that title. The Jets should take advantage of his flaws, and shake his confidence. This is acheived by getting pressure on Freeman.
Yet, my core five keys to the game can be found here: Week 1 Buccaneers at Jets: Keys to the Game
Also, we all know this will be Darrelle Revis' return home. Regardless if you're one to boo or not, the Jets will respect him, in the best way possible, by avoiding him at all costs. No point to test him—you're going to lose.
Enjoy the game, fellow Jets fans. Whether you'll be cheering on Gang Green at MetLife Stadium, watching on TV with a cold beer (or soda) at home, or looking for an online stream (here, you're welcome), we're all one Jets family.
