Worried that he won’t make the roster, New York Giants quarterback Jim Sorgi is planning to return from a torn capsule in his throwing shoulder two weeks earlier than originally expected.

“In my mind, I feel I’ve got to play against New England,” Sorgi said, per Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News.

NFL teams must have their 53-man roster set by Sept. 4 and head coach Tom Coughlin is still trying to decide who the backup quarterback will be.

“You don’t have much time left until they have to make tough decisions in this league,” the quarterback said. “I’ve seen those decisions go in a player’s favor and not in a player’s favor. I’m just going to try to get out there against New England and hopefully make the decision a little easier on them and hopefully in my favor.”

Meanwhile, starting quarterback Eli Manning returned to practice Wednesday and will play Saturday night in Baltimore against the Ravens.

I think Sorgi, if fully healthy, is a lock to make the roster. As long as his shoulder is ready week one, I don’t think he has anything to worry about, especially after the play of Bomar against the Steelers. If I were the Giants’ I’d advise Sorgi to take his time and be healthy come opening day.
