According to a source, veteran Patriots offensive lineman Matt Light is officially retired.

The Patriots have apparently taken the step of adding him to the reserve/retired list, making his retirement official at least on the team level. This currently frees up about $5 Million in cap space and opens up a roster spot.

This comes as no surprise as rumors have been swirling around for months of his eminent retirement.

It’s still possible that Light changes his mind. All he would have to do is notify them.

The NFL announced an expansion of 90 roster spots just yesterday, so you can see why the Patriots would do this in anticipation of the draft. Unsigned players would count against this roster limit.

Patriots' Light officially retires

Offensive lineman Matt Light officially retired on Tuesday when the New England Patriots placed him on the reserve/retired list, ESPNBoston.com reported. The move had been expected for several weeks, but because Light is now on the reserve/retired list, he doesn't count against the Patriots' 90-man roster limit. Light theoretically could change his mind and return,...

New England Patriots: most interesting team in 2012 NFL Draft?

Every year, they’re a fun team to watch on draft day, because they always seem to end up with more picks than anyone else. In 2012, even more so, because they have four picks in the first two rounds. And even though they were just one Wes Welker drop, or perhaps...
