Saints defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo says he and his defensive players feel they've let their team down and recognize there's an urgent need to improve.
Spagnuolo says his unit was sometimes tentative and a step late on a handful of big plays in a 40-32 loss to Washington last week that marked the debut of his new defense with New Orleans.
He says his defenders will have to play a little faster against Cam Newton this Sunday in Carolina.
Panthers coach Ron Rivera says Spagnuolo makes adjustments well, and that it would be short-sighted to judge his defense after one sub-par performance.
Spagnuolo acknowledges he's had experience with his units playing better later in a season, but says his Saints have to improve now.

In a minor move this morning, the Rams have agreed to terms with quarterback Kellen Clemens on a non-guaranteed contract, upgrading their depth at the position and pushing rookie Austin Davis back to the third string spot.
Clemens previously held the primary backup spot behind starter Sam Bradford, but with his previous deal calling for a $700,000 salary, St. Louis elected to release...
After watching two offensive lineman go down and seeing quarterback Sam Bradford get sacked on three occasions, it did not take long for the St. Louis Rams to make a roster move to accommodate the risk of carrying just two quarterbacks behind a shaky and injury riddled offensive line.

The Rams are bringing back backup QB Kellen Clemens Thursday after releasing him during the team's final roster cuts on Aug. 31.
As the primary backup to injury-prone starter Sam Bradford, Clemens was considered a surprise name on the Rams final cut list. His release left undrafted rookie Austin Davis as the teams No. 2 quarterback for the Rams Week One game against the...
ST. LOUIS (AP) The day before the St. Louis Rams' opener, middle linebacker James Laurinaitis signed a five-year contract extension. The business of sport out of the way, he put up the usual double-digit tackle day.

Washington Redskins (1-0) at St. Louis Rams (0-1)
I had the Rams as one of my underrated teams coming into the season. They improved 6 games in 2010, but, as could have been predictable, regressed 5 games last year. Teams that have a large improvement in win total typically regress the following season and vice versa. They should bounce back this year. Teams that regress 5 games...

When the Redskins went into New Orleans week 1, only the extreme faithful of Redskins Nation, and probably people within the Redskins organization for that matter, believe the Skins had the firepower to keep up with the Saints.
My how things change...
Robert Griffin III was the first rookie ever to throw for over 300 yards and 2 or more TD without throwing an interception.
RGIII certainly is capable of becoming a future Pro Bowler, but the talent around may decide his fate at Washington.
There are a bevy of decent backs and receivers to allow RGIII to succeed, but everybody needs to relax about this future stud becoming a current...
