Yesterday we started out our "State of the Falcons" series going position group by position group and seeing where we feel the Falcons roster is at now versus the 2012 roster. On paper, with the loss of Tyson Clabo and Todd McClure, the offensive line looks worse than it was in 2012. Now let's take a look at the wide receivers and tight ends. The main players at wide receiver are all back. Roddy White (92 receptions, 7 TD), Julio Jones (79 receptions, 10 TD) and Harry Douglas (38 receptions). The only other wide receiver with a reception was Drew Davis as he had four catches and 1 TD. He's also still on the roster. The Falcons also still have Tim Toone, James Rodgers, Kevin Cone and Marcus Jackson on the roster as well as UDFA's Rashad Evans, Darius Johnson and.Martel Moore. At tight end the Falcons bring back Tony Gonzalez (93 receptions, 8 TD) and Chase Coffman (1 rec). Michael Palmer (6 rec) will be replaced by fourth round draft pick Levine Toilolo (24 rec, 4 TD in 2012 at Stanford). Palmer was a good role player but Toilolo represents somebody with a much higher ceiling. As a fan I'd like to have more quality depth at WR but the talent at the top of this group is second to none in the NFL. Matt, Mike and I all agree that the Falcons are either the same or slightly improved here depending on how big of a jump you think Julio Jones takes in year three. Remember, he went from our third leading receiver in the regular season to our leading receiver in he playoffs. For arguments sake we will say the Falcons look to be the same (and by being the same this means we still have one of the top groups in the NFL) at WR/TE as they were last year because there are only so many footballs to go around and they will be dominated by Gonzo, Roddy and Julio in the passing game.
