Football and Futbol:
For the remainder of the 2013 NFL season the New England Patriots will be playing without DL Tommy Kelly, LB Jerod Mayo and DL Vince Wilfork. Losing any of these players out of the starting lineup is significant and hard to overcome. Losing all three would be inconceivable if only we weren’t actually experiencing it.
Co-captain Vince Wilfork (9 tackles) was the first to make his way to the Injured Reserve with a torn Achilles. When that happened, Patriot Nation was very concerned about what would happen to our defense. Vince is a big body who not only stops the run, but also stops the opponents from even thinking about running up the middle. Since Wilfork typically handles two guys at the line of scrimmage, it’s as if we have 12 players on defense at times.
Tommy Kelly (22 tackles, 2.5 sack and 1 fumble recovery) would be the next defensive starter to take a seat. Although Kelly did not make his way to the IR until November 2nd, he hasn’t played a snap since October 6th in Cincinnati. Keep in mind Kelly plays beside Wilfork, so with both of these men out of the lineup we are missing a 635 pound barricade from the center of the defense and have still managed to win 3 of 4 games.
Co-captain Jerod Mayo (55 tackles, 1.5 sacks and 1 fumble recovery) made his way to the IR on October 16th with a torn pectoral muscle. In addition to being a playmaker on the field, Mayo was also responsible for directing the other players as he was pretty much the quarterback of the defense by wearing the special helmet.
As if losing these three players wasn’t hard enough, the Patriots are currently replacing all three with rookies. Yes, you heard me, ROOKIES. In other words, 26 years of NFL experience is being replaced by zero years of experience and yet they are getting the job done. Yes, the defense has gone from being one of the top ranked to their current ranking of 21st, but these guys are certainly holding their own.
Moreover, although he is not a member of the IR, CB Aqib Talib (15 tackles, 4 interceptions) has also been sidelined for the past three games making the defense have their backs even further against the wall.
So, who are the rookies that have stepped up and made the most of their opportunities? Joe Vellano and Chris Jones have stepped into the middle of the defensive line to fill in for Wilfork and Kelly. Vellano was undrafted out of Maryland and spent some time being mentored by Wilfork during the preseason. He currently has 33 tackles and 1 sack.
Originally drafted by the Houston Texans, Jones made his way to the Patriots after being claimed off waivers for the second time in two weeks. Although he did not play in his first 3 NFL games, he has started the past 4 for the Patriots. Jones has 30 tackles and 5 assists with 10 of his tackles and 2 of his sacks coming against the Jets.
Jamie Collins, the Patriots top pick in the 2013 draft is the man replacing Jerod Mayo on the field while LB Dont’a Hightower takes over the communication role. With the amount of injured players, Bill Belichick is using a group effort and multiple looks to try and compensate for the lack of experience. The relatively recent additions of DT Isaac Sopoaga and DE Andre Carter will add some depth and experience to the young defense. Even though the defense has shown a little more bend than it did early in the season, I think they will continue to make scoring difficult for their opponents. Hopefully the offense will continue to score points like they did against the Steelers and the wins will continue to pile up.

The New England Patriots travel to Charlotte, North Carolina to take on the Panthers on Monday Night Football (yee-haw.). Kickoff is at 8:40 PM, with the indomitable Mike Tirico and Jon Gruden providing commentary.
The Patriots come off their bye after a huge 55-31 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Tom Brady looked his vintage self, throwing for over 400 yards for the fifth time...
There's a few areas of concern for the New England Patriots (7-2) as they're prepare to take on the Carolina Panthers (6-3) in Monday Nigh Football action. Safety Steve Gregory broke his thumb in the team's victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers two weeks ago and hasn't practiced since. Suffice to say, he likely won't be playing this week. Six others practiced, but...
First Round selections tend to be hit or miss in today's NFL. There is incredible pressure that comes with playing football at this level, compounded by the inference that the higher a player is selected, the more is expected very early... teams expect players to come in and perform right away. And players can either make it big or bust like a balloon; just look back at the 1999...
FOXBORO, Mass. — Since Shane Vereen broke his wrist against the Bills in Week 1, Nov. 18 has been a very important date on the Patriots’ schedule.
That’s when Vereen is eligible to return and New England will be able to display its “full” offense. Of course, since Week 1, Sebastian Vollmer was placed on injured reserve with a broken leg, so we’ll never know exactly...
New England Patriots CB Aqib Talib officially declared himself "day to day" and was on the practice field for the team's full-pads workout on Thursday.

While some feel that Shane Vereen will not help much, I disagree. The Patriots have not been able to get steady play from a running back since tge Buffalo game. Expect Vereen to do great in his return. @FPGuys: BREAKING: Per @nflnetwork NE expects to activate RB Vereen for #MNF – not a strong play […]
Patriots vs. Panthers: Breaking Down New England's Game Plan | James Christensen/Bleacher Report:...
Great news for the Patriots, as it appears likely that Aqib Talib will play on Monday night against the Carolina Panthers.
Talib has been sidelined since Week 6, when the Pats shutdown cornerback suffered a hip flexor injury. Up until that point, Talib was making a case for being the best cornerback in the entire league.
As the Patriots...
It is expected that Shane Vereen will return to the Patriots this week, just in time for a match up with the red-hot Carolina Panthers.
Shane's return could not be more welcomed at this point of the season. The Pats are positioned nicely at 7-2 but the Panthers are the team riding a five game winning streak and playing shutdown football on defense. The return of Vereen...
Rob Gronkowski found himself in some hot water, albeit very shallow, for some comments that he made in a video released by TMZ about a dancing asian fan. Gronk said "they told me he could only cook fried rice" and then also made a reference to the character from the Hangover.
Of course, this bit of joking threw the internet into a light frenzy. This, of course, despite...
Over the last three seasons, pass defense has been the weak link for the New England Patriots.
No other NFL team gave up more 20-plus passing plays in that span, with the Pats consistently near the bottom of the league in total passing yards allowed and ranked third-worst in yards per pass.
However, the Pats' defense had its best season against the run in nearly a decade in...
Rob Gronkowski got into a little heat over the bye week, when he was caught on tape commenting on an Asian fan's dancing by referencing "fried rice" and Leslie Chow (the Ken Jeong character from The Hangover films).
Gronk came forward and addressed the issue in a couple of ways. First, he apologized to anyone who could have taken offense to his words, acknowledging...

New England Patriots (7-2) at Carolina Panthers (6-3)
It’s almost always a bad idea to bet against Tom Brady as an underdog. In his career, Brady is 29-13 ATS as an underdog and 40-15 ATS as an underdog or favorite of less than 3. It makes sense. This is the same Tom Brady who still feels slighted by being taken in the 6th round 13 years ago. He’s at his best when people doubt...
