Steelers’ Cam Heyward Detailed The Reality Of Playing Alongside His Brother Connor Heyward
Philip G. Pavely-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Connor Heyward, the younger brother of Cam Heyward, with their sixth-round pick (208th overall) in the 2022 NFL Draft. Connor, who previously played as a tight end for Michigan State, follows in the footsteps of his older brother, who has carved out an impressive career with the Steelers after his time at Ohio State.

While Connor focuses on offense and Cam on defense, the familial bond between them transcends the field. Despite their differing positions, Cam has generously shared his wealth of experience and knowledge with his younger brother, aiding Connor's transition to the professional level.

Cam recently joined Jim Jones on The Rich Eisen Show to discuss various aspects of the Steelers' offseason. During the interview, he was asked about the role he plays in ensuring his brother's success in Pittsburgh.

"When you first get into this league, you think you're invincible, and you are quickly reminded that you are not. But I think about taking care of your body, doing the little things off the field, spending time with [Connor], not being the first guy gone. I'm always preaching these things to my little brother. I like to think I'm the CliffsNotes to this for him. I'm giving him every bit of knowledge I've got, putting him on a great plan to keep being successful.”

Few players are as fortunate as Connor to have a brother who boasts a 13-season NFL career. Connor's luck extends even further, being drafted onto a team where his brother is not only a revered figure, but also an exceptional player.

As Cam's illustrious career nears its conclusion, Connor's journey is just beginning, and Cam is keen to offer his guidance. However, he understands the importance of allowing Connor to learn through firsthand experience as well.

"Some of it, he's got to experience for himself. I didn't always have somebody looking out for my best interests. So sometimes it's like, 'Yeah, you need to experience that moment. It's gonna make you better.’ It's a balance between the two, but I love seeing the course he's on, because I think he's well equipped for it.”

Amid speculation that Cam would retire after the 2023 season, he swiftly put those rumors to rest, affirming his return with a resolute declaration of unfinished business. The notion of Cam concluding his illustrious career without clinching a Super Bowl victory weighs heavily on the hearts of many Steelers fans.

As Cam's career approaches its twilight, the window of opportunity narrows, yet the Steelers' significant offseason improvements offer a glimmer of hope. Cam's excitement is palpable, particularly with the notable addition of Russell Wilson at quarterback, injecting fresh energy and optimism into the team.

Steelers' Connor Heyward Could See More Targets In 2024

During the 2023 season, Connor showcased his skills with 23 receptions for 167 receiving yards. While he may not have been the primary focus of the offense in terms of production, his contributions as a tenacious blocker and team-oriented player were certainly appreciated. With two seasons under his belt with the Steelers, and now under the guidance of a new offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith, Connor's role is poised to expand.

Smith's reputation for utilizing tight ends bodes well for Connor's potential increased involvement in the offense for the upcoming 2024 season. Especially with the absence of Diontae Johnson, following his trade, Connor's role could see a bit of a uptick. This presents an opportunity for him to garner more targets and become a more integral part of the team's offensive strategy.

With Cam's mentorship and the overall improvements made on offense, the stage is set for an exciting 2024 season for the Heyward brothers. Steelers fans are eager to see all the new faces in Pittsburgh get to work. The time for the Steelers to be contenders in the NFL is now.
