Steelers’ Cam Heyward Is Likely To Have His Contract Situation Figured Out 'Within The Next Couple Of Months'

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been fortunate to have defensive tackle Cam Heyward as a cornerstone of their team for 13 seasons. Throughout this time, Heyward has been instrumental in the Steelers' defensive success, starting in 159 games and amassing impressive statistics: 647 combined tackles, 80.5 sacks, 121 tackles for loss, 179 quarterback hits, 47 passes defensed, two interceptions, and eight forced fumbles.

Now, at 35 years old, Heyward finds himself in discussions about his contract situation in Pittsburgh as he enters the twilight of his career. Towards the end of the 2023 season, Heyward hinted at retirement due to injuries that limited his impact. However, he has expressed his desire to continue playing and is adamant about not accepting a pay cut.

Heyward recently disclosed his intention to play for at least two, and ideally three, more seasons. While somewhat cryptic in his statement, he hinted that he might consider finishing his career elsewhere if necessary. Steelers insider Mark Kaboly joined 93.7 The Fan on Monday morning to discuss the reports and rumors surrounding Heyward's contract. During his appearance, Kaboly shared his insights on what he believes the Steelers will do regarding Heyward and his contract.

“Well, I think they sign him to a multi-year deal within the next couple of months or so and move on from there… Very, very similar words came out of his mouth at that time. ‘I still wanna play, if it’s somewhere else, we will have to cross that bridge when we get there.’ That’s just him playing the game right now to get that out there. He’s not going anywhere. I can see him definitely finishing his career here.”

Kaboly is confident that Heyward will conclude his career in the Steel City. He pointed out that similar sentiments were expressed by Heyward a couple of seasons ago, suggesting that Heyward is simply navigating the business side of the NFL. Kaboly fully anticipates that the Steelers will honor Heyward's career similarly to how they handled the retirement of legendary quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

"He means more than just when he’s on the field right now. We’ve learned that with the [Ben] Roethlisberger ending. They will be able to construct a contract in a way that covers their rear end and makes him happy. That’s just a lot of fluff right now. I can’t see Cam Heyward going anywhere. I could see a three-year deal where he gets his $22 million this year, a decent salary next year, but be able to cover their butt for the third year to be able to get out of it if they have to."

Heyward has disclosed that discussions about an extension with the Steelers have taken place, although the specifics of these talks remain undisclosed. With a cap hit exceeding $22 million in 2024, Heyward currently holds the second-highest cap hit on the team. 

Notably, the Steelers' defense ranks among the highest-paid units in the NFL, while their offense stands as one of the least expensive groups—a contrast that reflects the team's recent identity.

Steelers Offense Needs To Step Up In 2024

Historically, the Steelers' defense has shouldered the team to winning seasons, while the offense has faced challenges. However, with the arrival of Russell Wilson and Arthur Smith as the new offensive coordinator in 2024, there's optimism for a shift in momentum.

The likelihood of Heyward remaining in Pittsburgh appears strong, especially considering Kaboly's insights into how the Steelers are likely to approach his contract negotiations.
