Steelers’ Dan Moore Jr. Could Be In Big Trouble After Draft Night: 'He Potentially Could Not Be On This Roster'

The Pittsburgh Steelers enter this upcoming draft with two pressing needs. They are in search of a wide receiver and a center, both of whom must possess the ability to step in as rookies and vie for a starting position from day one. These individuals should boast a combination of talent, experience, and reliability, ready to contribute from the outset of the season.

While some speculate that the Steelers may also aim to bolster their offensive line, the prevailing thought is that their primary focus will be on securing a wide receiver and a center with their initial selections. However, this doesn't discount the possibility of Pittsburgh addressing their offensive tackle situation as well.

Ray Fittipaldo recently discussed the Steelers' offseason plans and draft strategy on 93.7 The Fan. During his segment, he disclosed that the Steelers hold a strong interest in Dan Moore Jr but are aiming to find a replacement for him.

"They had to start him as a rookie. He wasn't very good, got a little bit better each and every year, but he's still not a guy that I want as my blindside protector. I think he's a guy who has the respect of Mike Tomlin and Pat Meyer. I think he's worked hard to achieve that. But he's certainly a guy who could be over-recruited, and he's a guy who could potentially not be on this roster in 2024 if things break a certain way with the draft and how these guys come along.”

It has been reported on multiple occasions that the Steelers have a genuine appreciation for Moore's abilities, yet this sentiment doesn't preclude the possibility of them seeking his replacement. Despite Moore's performance in the 2023 season not being subpar, it was insufficient to guarantee his position on the team. Pro Football Focus assigned him a grade of 51.7 for his performance during that season. Fittipaldo finished off his sentiments about Moore.

"I don't want to disrespect Dan. I think he's worked hard, and he's gotten better, but he's definitely someone that they can move on from and improve at that position if they have a chance to, for sure.”

The Steelers selected Moore in the fourth round (128th overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft. Over his three seasons with the team, he has consistently started in every game for which he was available, amounting to 49 starts in total.

While Moore has shown dedication, it's acknowledged by many fans that he lacks the natural talents of some other tackles, leading to hopes for greater development. However, his journey has been challenging, as evidenced by his PFF grade.

Steelers' 2024 Draft Will Tell All For The Future Of Dan Moore Jr.

While numerous reports suggest the Steelers maintain a higher regard for Moore than many others, this doesn't deter them from exploring alternative options. The draft presents opportunities to acquire young, promising tackles without the burden of a hefty contract.

One such prospect is Amarius Mims from Georgia, currently ranked sixth on Mel Kiper Jr.'s big board for tackles. Projected as a second-round talent, Mims may be beyond the Steelers' reach due to their other pressing needs. Nonetheless, they could opt to unearth another gem in the fourth round, akin to their selection of Moore. By allowing Moore to retain his starting role while grooming a new prospect, the Steelers could cultivate healthy competition within the team.

Although the Steelers have made strides this offseason, they still have work to do in fortifying the trenches. The approach they take in the 2024 draft will offer insight into their true assessment of Moore's future with the team. As for offseason pronouncements, it's wise to take them with a grain of salt, particularly those from Omar Khan. The 2024 draft is set to be very exciting and Steeler Nation is eager to see the new faces on their team.
