Steelers Desperate To Find A Star WR To Pair With George Pickens: 'They Would Love To Pursue Aiyuk, And Have'
Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been in dire need of a wide receiver ever since they traded away their star, Diontae Johnson, to the Carolina Panthers. With new quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Justin Fields in town, it's evident that shoring up the wide receiver position is a top priority on the offensive side of the ball.

Reports have been circulating for some time that the Steelers are actively seeking a standout wide receiver through trade. Among the most intriguing names is San Francisco 49ers star Brandon Aiyuk. However, confusion arose when leaked text messages suggested Aiyuk was seeking a trade. These rumors were promptly dispelled by his agent.

Although the rumors have been put to rest, the Steelers remain proactive. Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette revealed on Wednesday that the Steelers have been vigorously pursuing a trade with the 49ers. The objective is to pair a star wide receiver with the young and talented George Pickens.

“They would love to pursue Aiyuk, and have, but that doesn't mean the 49ers want to trade him. That's what they have wanted to do -- find a big-time veteran receiver to pair with George Pickens.”

While the 49ers' reluctance to trade Aiyuk doesn't eliminate the possibility, it certainly complicates matters for the Steelers and Omar Khan. Despite the denial of Aiyuk's trade request, the Steelers find themselves without leverage in negotiations. The 49ers hold the upper hand, and if the Steelers are serious about acquiring him, they'll need to part ways with significant assets and negotiate a pricey long-term contract for Aiyuk.

Aiyuk's stellar performance in the 2023 season, where he played a pivotal role in the 49ers' journey to the Super Bowl, speaks volumes. Though they fell short in the big game, Aiyuk's contribution was undeniable, tallying 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns during the 2023 season. Consistently productive throughout his four year NFL career, Aiyuk's addition alongside Pickens would elevate the Steelers' receiving corps from mediocre to top-tier, presenting a significant boost to their offensive firepower.

However, the gamble on Aiyuk comes with considerable risks and rewards. Acquiring one of the league's premier wide receivers means committing to a substantial contract, coupled with the necessity of offering a compelling trade package due to the 49ers' reluctance to part ways. Should circumstances change, such as Aiyuk expressing discontent or dissatisfaction with the 49ers' contract negotiations, the possibility of a trade may become slightly more attainable.

Alternatively, the Steelers could explore drafting a talented wide receiver from this year's deep pool of prospects. Yet, relying on a rookie to step into a starting role immediately presents its own risks, albeit offering a more budget-friendly approach. Ultimately, the decision rests on weighing the potential rewards against the associated risks, whether through pursuing Aiyuk or exploring draft options.

Steelers' Potential Trade Target Brandon Aiyuk Messaged Mike Tomlin

The buzz surrounding the potential trade of Aiyuk to Pittsburgh gained momentum after Aiyuk's social media post, where he tagged Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin. The post posed a question to Tomlin about being his twin.

After the post, he clarified that it was merely playful banter, lacking serious intent. Nonetheless, it sparked a frenzy among Steeler Nation. It also provided Steelers fans with an abundance of hope that a trade for Aiyuk was a serious possibility.

The 49ers have expressed their desire to retain Aiyuk and are engaged in discussions aimed at reaching a mutually beneficial agreement. These ongoing talks will shed more light on whether the Steelers' interest in Aiyuk is grounded in genuine hope or mere speculation. Thanks to Dulac's insightful reporting, it's evident that the Steelers are fully invested and will exhaust every avenue to facilitate a trade for the talented wide receiver.
