Steelers' Jaylen Warren Gets Outstanding Praise By Brian Baldinger For Devastating Block
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers didn't just come away from their 2023 Week 16 game against the Cincinnati Bengals with a victory; they made a confident and direct statement. Throughout the week, the lead-up to Saturday's contest with the Bengals revolved around the struggles in Pittsburgh, Mike Tomlin's future with the Steelers and locker room drama. One issue, in particular, was the blocking situation involving George Pickens and Jaylen Warren, but with one play, Warren showed how he chose to respond.

Steelers' Warren Lands Violent Block

With the Steelers leading the Bengals 7-0 after the first quarter, Pittsburgh was driving inside Cincinnati's 10-yard line with the opportunity to put some distance between them and their divisional opponent. On the second play of the second quarter, Calvin Austin III took a jet sweep all the way into the end zone to give the Steelers a 14-0 lead.

While the touchdown was impressive, considering how unsuccessful jet sweeps have been for the Steelers in recent memory, what stood out the most was the block that Warren had, essentially clearing the way for Austin. The block would have been noticeable regardless, but considering the drama with Pickens during the week and the fact that Warren stands a whole 5'8' tall, it became a key point in the game. Brian Baldinger went on X to break down the brutal block that Warren threw down, and according to Baldinger, Warren's play would have the seal of approval from Steelers of the past.

"I don't care; Rocky Bleier, Merril Hoge, they would appreciate that kind of blocking. This guy, when he hits you, he moves you! Unbelievable power... Whether he's a lead blocker, whether he's on blitz pickup, if it's running the ball, running through people - Jaylen Warren has got it!"

It's one thing to compliment the play of a modern NFL athlete, but it's another level of praise to compare them directly to players of a bygone era. It's a source of pride for those who played in the NFL of old, and with that comes caution in putting someone from the current league at their level. Baldinger understands the importance of not throwing around comparisons without consideration, which makes his words on Warren so much more meaningful.

Steelers Will Need More Of The Same To Finish 2023 Strong

Steelers fans know better than to take a singular win and run with it, especially when the last victory over the Bengals in Week 12 of 2023 sparked their three-game losing streak. It almost felt like the Steelers had no choice but to win in that dominant fashion if only to put some of the questions and concerns from the season to rest. While it certainly didn't erase the entirety of their struggles from 2023, it gave Pittsburgh a moment to breathe and get their bearings.

With only two games remaining in the Steelers' 2023 season, the margin for error has gone from slim to nonexistent. All their mistakes were used up during the three-game slide that included embarrassing losses consecutively to teams that only had two wins before meeting the Steelers. They will need more intense blocking from Warren, more 150+ yard games from Pickens, more Mason Rudolph, and more suffocating defense. If the 2023 Steelers can continue whatever brought on this inspired play for two more weeks, then there is a chance that fans in Pittsburgh could actually get to watch a Steelers postseason game.

If 2023 has taught the Steelers faithful anything, it is that there has been a distinct lack of positive consistency from their squad. For the first time, though, the team pulled together and executed in all three phases - something that hadn't happened all year. Something brought about the blowout win against the Bengals on Saturday, and whatever it was, the Steelers must hold onto it if they want to consider 2023 any kind of success.

How many more games will the 2023 Steelers win?
