Pittsburgh Steelers backup quarterback Byron Leftwich underwent surgery Monday to repair a fracture in his left arm.
Leftwich, 31, was injured in Saturday night's preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons.
While he is considered a candidate for season-ending injured reserve, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said the club will not make a decision on Leftwich's status for a couple of days.
Leftwich's absence leaves Charlie Batch and Dennis Dixon battling for the backup QB role. Tomlin said a decision will not be made until the final preseason game.
Leftwich, who began his career as the starter in Jacksonville, has appeared in just 19 games over the past five seasons. He completed five of seven passes for 42 yards in his only action with the Steelers in 2010.
