Steelers Reportedly Never Were Interested In Tyler Boyd; Only An Option If 'Desperation' Sets In
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers' overwhelmingly interesting 2024 offseason has kept fans on the edge of their seats. A revamp of the quarterback room, big-name signing at insider linebacker, and trade of star wide receiver, Diontae Johnson, has kept people in the media talking. One of the biggest issues with trading the wideout to the Carolina Panthers was the gaping hole it left at the position for the team. Without many notable free agents left, it appears as if the organization may look for their number two wide receiver in the 2024 NFL Draft, despite many believing that they would target Pittsburgh native, Tyler Boyd.

Any talks with the former Cincinnati Bengals wideout have seemed to stall out. He would offer any team a solid option as a third wide receiver, but it doesn't seem as if he is worth paying number two type of money. That could be the reason the Steelers have decided to not bring him in just yet, or maybe, General Manager Omar Khan wasn't very interested in him in the first place.

Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has been covering the team for a while and has a good idea of what's going on inside their building. In a fan chat on Wednesday, he seemed fairly confident that Boyd coming to the Steel City to play wasn't necessarily a big-time possibility. Someone asked if the talks with Boyd were dead or not. He was direct in his response.

"I don't know if they were really alive," Dulac wrote.

Boyd is a consistent receiver and would be a solid addition to a depleted room, but that doesn't mean the Steelers are going to force a signing that might not be the perfect fit for Arthur Smith's offense. There aren't too many solid options left in free agency, so maybe Khan is content heading into the draft without a legitimate option behind George Pickens.

Dulac was also asked if Boyd was still on the team's radar. He backed up his first answer by declaring that there is only one real chance that Boyd would be coming to play in Pittsburgh.

"Only in desperation perhaps."

The wide receiver position was a hot topic in the chat. The two top areas of need for the Steelers entering April will be at center and wideout. Dulac is pretty confident when the team will select their potential second wide receiver.

"You will see a receiver drafted high, probably by round 2."

Another fan chimed in and asked about the draft. Dulac believes that there is only one more chance regarding a wide receiver upgrade before the draft begins. It's unlikely, but not out of the question. However, he still believes the draft is where Khan will target a top pass-catcher.

"Unless a big trade materializes and I don't see that happening now," Dulac wrote.

Big names like Brandon Aiyuk and Justin Jefferson have been thrown around, but in reality, the Steelers draft the position better than almost any franchise in the NFL. It's very possible that they use two selections at the position in an attempt to solidify the area for years to come. Khan has proven that he has a plan for everything, and this situation is no different. There will be a move made, and possibly multiple, but a free agent like Boyd seems to be out of the question.

Steelers Have Sent Clear Message In 2024 Offseason

It has been very apparent that Khan and his team were interested in completely revamping the offense during the offseason. He has done just that, and there are still questions on the offensive line and wide receiver. Big trades and signings may be done for now, but the draft is going to be the perfect opportunity to continue to recreate an offense that was broken under Matt Canada.
