TEAMS: Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers have started their trek to shave $25 mil off their team salary. And they came about $4 million closer to getting under the salary cap yesterday just by releasing WR Arnaz Battle and CB Bryant McFadden.
If you’re asking yourself who those two are it’s probably because didn’t do a whole lot this year. Battle was strictly a special teams guy for the two years he spent with the Steelers but he was hurt almost all year. McFadden was supposed to start opposite of Ike Taylor but when he got hurt early on he lost his job to William Gay. After that, he just continued to sink so far down the depth chart that if the Steelers hadn’t cut him, he probably would’ve drowned.
Both guys were pretty much forced out for the same two reasons – besides the salary cap issue. Corners Curtis Brown and Cortez Allen made a lot of noise for being rookies, and they’re both special teams beasts and depth at the corner position. Omar Khan was just killing birds with this move because Brown and Allen pretty much make Battle and McFadden obsolete.
This was the first move the Steelers made to get under the salary cap ceiling before the March deadline, and so far so good.
