The Steelers took another step today to securing their draft class for 2012. According to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, via Twitter, this afternoon:
@EdBouchette: #Steelers sign third-rounder, LB Sean Spence. One rookie left, top pick DeCastro.
Terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.
Spence is a linebacker out of Miami taken in the 3rd round this year, 86th overall. At 5’11, 231 lbs he’s got speed and quickness to add to the defense but will likely start out on special teams this season. He is projected to play in the middle for Dick Lebeau’s defense under the watchful eye of Linebackers coach and Defensive assistant Keith Butler. You can view our original draft day writeup about Spence here.
Although rookies don’t normally get a chance to start on a Pittsburgh defense, Spence may get some playing time in the middle depending on how things pan out and what injuries may occur as the season progresses.
Ideally in 2013 he’ll fight it out with Stevenson Sylvest...
