Amidst injuries to quarterbacks Ben Roethlisberger and Byron
Leftwich and wide receivers Antonio Brown and Jerricho Cotchery, the Pittsburgh
Steelers went out and signed wide receiver Plaxico Burress and quarterback Jed
Leftwich stepped in for the injured Roethlisberger last
weekend against the Baltimore Ravens. He did rush for a score and kept the
Steelers in the game but was ultimately injured and later diagnosed with
fractured ribs. Pittsburgh has announced that veteran third-string QB Charlie
Batch is starting this weekend against the Browns, and Hoyer was brought in to
back him up.
Hoyer is the former backup of New England Patriots
quarterback Tom Brady. The 27-year-old has three years of stats, but he’s only
thrown 43 pass attempts in NFL games over that span.
Burress was drafted by the Steelers and spent his first five
years in the league with the club. Over his five seasons in Pittsburgh he
caught 261 passes for 4164 yards and 22 touchdowns.
