Interview: Former NFL Player Sterling Sharpe
Written By: An'Drea Denman
Sterling Sharpe is a five time Pro Bowl Player that was drafted in the 1st round of the NFL draft in 1988 by the Green Bay Packers where he went on to play his entire career from 1988-1994. Sterling is also part of the few sibling tandems that have existed in the NFL his brother is Shannon Sharpe the former Denver Bronco Pro Bowl Player.
ANDREA: What do you miss most about playing in the NFL?
STERLING: I don't miss anything about playing in the NFL. I had such a wonderful time and I got to play with some outstanding talent for a wonderful organization. I didn't leave a thing. I got to play for as long as I was supposed to and I left very happy
ANDREA: If you could go back in time what would you have done differently?
STERLING: My career went the way it was suppose. I would not have changed a think because that would have changed who I was and what I felt about the game of football. My career went the direction it really needed to go.
ANDREA: Looking back on your career what do you think the perception of Sterling Sharpe is to others?
STERLING: I have no clue what the perception is of me. As a player I really did enjoy winning and disliked to lose a game. That is a question for someone else to answer.
ANDREA: Who do you think was a better player you or your brother?
STERLING: My brother was so much better than I was. He play a very physical and athletic position of tight end. His numbers are better, his teams were better and he was so fun to watch.
ANDREA: How hard was it for you to walk away from the sport during the climax of your career?
STERLING: Walking away from the NFL because of a neck injury was easy. I have always been prepared to quit. I did everything by the book as far as taking care of the money I made and getting my degree in College. It was a great 7 yrs I had but when it is a matter of life and death, that is an easy acceptance.
ANDREA: Compared to when you were playing how much has the sport changed?
STERLING: Money is different and there are more teams but he sport of football has not changed much. More protection for players and better benefits is about it.
ANDREA: Name a current player that you wished would have been playing on your team in your era?
STERLING: I like all the current players and loved the players I got to play with. It I wanted one of today's players on my team it would be Ray Lewis.
ANDREA: How has life been for you since retiring? How did you become a sportscaster?
STERLING: Life since I left the game has been even more fun than playing. I get to talk to more coach about their views of their teams and get to know how they think. Being in TV gives me an opportunity to break down the game and give viewers an inside look into the success and failure of a play, player and team. I would have never dreamed of being in TV since I didn't talk to the media when I was a player.
ANDREA: Ive heard a lot about you being a taxidermist can you give me some information on exactly what that is?
STERLING: I don't know where that came from but I have heard a lot about me being a Taxidermist. I guess they are telling me to learn.
