By the looks of things, Steve Smith should be just fine for the Panthers’ season opener.  I’m sure quarterback Cam Newton will be excited to have him back on the field.

QUICK SPIN: No Staph Infection for Steve Smith (Car)

Thomas Davis returns from third ACL injury

Thomas Davis did something Sunday night nobody ever has in the history of the NFL: The linebacker returned to see actual game action following a third ACL injury that should have already ended his career. Davis has played in just nine regular season games since the end of the 2008 campaign, and the odds were stacked heavily against him completing this return. But there he was Sunday...

Carolina Panthers to be NFL’s 2012 breakout team

Charlotte, NC. The rookie season that Cam Newton had in 2011 was quite possibly the best that any first year QB has ever had. The 2011 #1 overall pick burst onto the scene last September and never looked back. He stunned the NFL world with 2 straight 400 yard passing games….in his first two NFL games as a starting QB for the Carolina Panthers. The guy immediately showed ridiculous...

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Panthers coach Ron Rivera says he expects five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Steve Smith will return to practice Sunday and play in the Sept. 9 season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Rivera says Smith is "improving" after developing a foot infection earlier in the week. Smith, who didn't practice, is among several key players sitting...

Panthers K Medlock wins NFL job in 'final attempt'

Justin Medlock was a little apprehensive when the Carolina Panthers called in March and asked him to come in for a tryout. After all, he had a three-year offer on the table to return and kick for the CFL's Hamilton Tiger-Cats, a job with some measure of short-term security. In Carolina, he knew he'd have to fight an uphill battle to unseat 15-year veteran Olindo Mare to...

Carolina Panthers: Cam Newton is Playoff Bound

With just over a week left until the return of America's biggest sport, the Carolina Panthers are bringing the mentality "playoffs or bust" into the upcoming season. Sure, they play in one of the tougher divisions in football due to the Saints and Falcons, but do you think that scares Cam Newton?A former Heisman Trophy winner and national champion at Auburn, Newton...

2012 Carolina Panthers Preview

This February will mark ten years since Jake Delhomme and Steve Smith led the Carolina Panthers to the brink of greatness. Despite losing to an Adam Vinitieri field goal, the Panthers have established themselves as a ferocious team that is currently willing itself to return to its former heights. This relatively young team (founded in 1995) has endured some rough times as...

Panthers’ Jon Beason hoping to play week 1

Getty According to Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer, Panthers linebacker Jon Beason won’t play in Thursday’s preseason finale.  The hope at this point is that he’ll be ready for next week’s season opener as he continues to nurse a hamstring injury. “@janderson91z: @josephperson Any update on Beason?”…not playing this week. PK Mare, P Harris among Panthers' cuts

Place-kicker Olindo Mare was released by the Panthers just one season into a four-year, $12 million deal. Justin Medlock is the only other kicker on the roster, although Carolina could bring in more competition with veterans such as Josh Brown and Neil Rackers on the free-agent market. Mare, 39, made 22 of 28 (78.6 percent) of his field-goal attempts in 2011, with two of his six...

Can Cam Newton Continue to Be an Elite Fantasy Quarterback in 2012?

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton exceeded all expectations in his rookie season. The former Heisman Trophy winner transformed the Carolina offense into one of the league’s best last season after the 2010 version was the NFL’s worst. Newton’s ability to rack up points with both his arm and his legs is what makes him such a special fantasy quarterback. The 6-foot...

Panthers cut veteran kicker Mare, punter Harris

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- The Panthers have released veteran kicker Olindo Mare just one year after giving him a four-year, 12 million contract. Justin Medlock, a journeyman kicker who last played for the CFL's Hamilton Tiger-Cats, appears to have won the Carolina job. Medlock displayed a stronger leg at training camp than Mare, who was 22 of 28 on field goals attempts last year...

Panthers place David Gettis on PUP, Brandon Hogan on IR

David Gettis was in the mix for the Panthers #3 receiver job at one point this offseason, but he’s been on the active/PUP all offseason and has yet to practice. He’s still working his way back from a torn ACL that cost him all of last season and, rather than activating him, the Panthers have shifted him to the reserve/PUP list, which means he’ll miss at least 6 weeks. The Panthers...

Most of the starters play into the second half and it gives a feel of how prepared the team is for the regular season. If that’s the case, then the Carolina Panthers might need to head to the film room and get to studying as their performance Sunday night on national television didn’t exactly...
