When the NY Giants decided not to re-sign receiver Steve Smith, the hate that flowed towards the Giants came in torrents. Giants fans just couldn't believe they weren't re-signing a receiver coming off a major knee injury. At he time, I completely understood the Giants position on Smith. Turns out, it was the correct call.

"Hey Eli, can I get a ticket to the
Super Bowl?"Steve Smith signed a one-year contract with the Eagles. Keep in mind, the Giants doctors said he would probably miss the first half of the season to rehab the knee. The Eagles doctors said he would be ready for the start of the season. As it turned out, the Eagles were right. He was ready. Unfortunately for Smith, and the Eagles, he was by and large a non-factor.

Smith finished the season with 11 reception, 124 yards, and one touchdown. He played in nine games, but only had receptions in five. On December 12, the Eagles put Smith on the injured reserve list due to a, yes, knee injury. And it was the same knee he had surgery on.

Roster moves aren't allowed yet, per NFL rules, but all indications are that Smith has played his last game in an Eagles uniform. The Eagles paid him a $500,000 signing bonus, then $1.5 million for the season. He's due a $281,250 roster bonus.
