Former 49ers great Steve Young might be the godfather of the mobile quarterback/passer era. Young was one of the first players in the league to be just as dangerous a passer as he was a runner. Young played in the disciplined precision of the west coast offense, so he was never allotted the time to freestyle like current Niners quarterback Colin Kaepernick does. Young who was as good as there ever was, per Around The League that he’s jealous of Kaepernick because he could never use the Pistol Formation. “I’m actually really jealous about the pistol. I think it’s such a cool thing,” Young told Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. Young thinks the formation has helped Kaepernick mature, by taking out the complex reads. “The pistol isn’t going to go away, but the job in the long run is going to be to deliver the ball from the pocket,” Young said. “This is a wonderful bridge for young players. “Look what’s happened to these mobile guys, my heroes, my guys. There’s this bridge now that they can have success, get more confidence, go to the Super Bowl.”
