The St. Louis Rams have agreed to void the remainder of running back Steven Jackson’s contract, allowing him to become a free agent following the season, according to CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco.

Jackson has been with the Rams since being selected 24th overall in the 2004 NFL draft. Since that time, he has amassed a franchise record 9,364 rushing yards—fourth amongst active players—and 52 touchdowns.
Though successful in the stats department, Jackson’s career has been squandered on disappointing Rams teams that have not made the playoffs since his rookie season and have never had a winning season with him on the roster.
Unfortunately, Jackson’s decision to leave may be too little, too late. At 29 years old, Jackson’s best years are past him and his proneness to injury will only become more prevalent in his remaining years as a professional football player.
