In todays NFL, it’s rare to find a franchise-type player/perennial Pro Bowler play at such a high level while keeping an incredibly low profile. Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali has always been that diamond in the rough — both on and off the field — but for the first time in his career, he’s making off-the-field headlines for the wrong reasons.

Hali, currently 28-years-old, was suspended without pay for one game by the NFL for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. He will also be fined an additional game’s paycheck. The substance which caused the suspension has not been revealed.

Hali released a statement earlier today, which was posted on 610 Sports – KCSP’s Facebook page:

I apologize to my teammates, the Hunt family, the Kansas City Chiefs organization and most importantly, our fans. I accept the discipline from the league and will return week 2 of the NFL season with a commitment to erase this mistake with my play on the field and my conduct off of it.

Based on the statement, Hali will not appeal the suspension, as he plans on sitting out the first game.

The Chiefs and GM Scott Pioli also released a statement regarding the suspension, but it’s about as cookie-cutter of a statement as you can get.

The Chiefs’ 2012 campaign kicks off September 9th at home as they take on the Falcons. Hali’s first game will come in week 2, when KC travels to Buffalo to face Nick Sukay (hopefully) and the Bills.
