tcbailey24's Top 20 Tight Ends

With the 4th of my 7 part NFL series, I will give you my top 20 tight ends today. Tight end is a very unique position in today's NFL, as they are now a huge part of the offense in both blocking and receiving. Some are mainly blocking oriented, some are receiver oriented, and some can do both. Anyway, tight ends can really improve an offense immensely.

1. Antonio Gates, Chargers: Gates has been a premier TE in the game for a few years now, and he shows why every Sunday. His combination of size and athleticism make him very hard to cover and tackle, and therefore he records many TD's.

2. Jason Witten, Cowboys: Witten is a physical TE who puts up receiver-like numbers. His size helps him plow through defenders and his toughness does the rest.

3. Kellen Winslow, Browns: Winslow had a breakout year last season with Derek Anderson at the helm. He posted career bests in yards and TD's. He is also a pretty good blocker. kellen is also a soldier.

4. Dallas Clark, Colts: As usual, Clark had another solid year with the Colts, and caught 11 touchdown passes. He seems to do everything a TE is suppose to do well.

5.Tony Gonzalez, Chiefs: What can you say about Gonzo? He has achieved everything a tight end can hope for and still is playing at a high level today, even though he will enter his 12th season in two months.

6. Todd Heap, Ravens: Heap could probably be the definition of "solid." Even though he was out for a lot of the season last year, he was on pace for another good season.

7. Chris Cooley, Redskins: Cooley has a well-rounded game and has real good numbers for only being in the league for four years.

8. Heath Miller, Steelers: Miller is a young, physical tight end who can block well, and also be solid on the receiving end.

9. Tony Scheffler, Broncos: Tony has exceeded expectations in his first two years with the Broncos. Yes, he was supposed to be a decent pass catching TE, but he has flourished into a really good young talent.

10. Owen Daniels, Texans: Average sized tight end that has played much better than average in his first two seasons with Houston. I think we'll be poised for an even bigger season this year as the Texans make a run at their first playoff appearance in their history.

11. Ben Watson, Patriots: Watson doesn't have the best numbers due to Randy Moss and Wes Welker, but he is a tight end that can get it done when given the opportunity. He has some decent speed as well.

12. Jeremy Shockey, Giants: Shockey has always been a tough player who could throw a good block. His receiving skills are solid as well, but we will see how he comes off his injury.

13. Daniel Graham, Broncos: Graham is possibly the best, if not the best, blocking TE in the league. He fits well in Denver as he poses as an extra blocker for Denver running backs in the zone blocking system. He can also catch a few passes.

14. Vernon Davis, 49ers: Davis, like Gates, is an extremely athletic end and has improved in both seasons in the NFL, which is saying something when you don't have a decent QB throwing to you.

15.Greg Olsen, Bears: Olsen was a good performer for the Bears as a rook last season, and should get a bigger role this year, as he will be the Bears best pass catcher.

16.Zach Miller, Raiders: Miller was strong at the end of the year last season and I expect it to carry over to this season. If JaMarcus Russell can get him the ball, things for the Raiders O will improve all around.

17.L.J. Smith, Eagles: Smith has some good talent, and if he can become a better pass catcher, Smith could be a top 10 TE by the end of the season.

18. Marcedes Lewis, Jaguars: Lewis has good size and is able spread the D, and I think he could play a bigger role this year as the Jags try and make a run at the Super Bowl.

19. Kevin Boss, Giants: Boss has good upside and filled in for Jeremy Shockey very well last season when Shockey was injured. He also came up big in the Giants Super Bowl victory.

20. Alge Crumpler, Titans: Crumpler is a very dependable TE, who has good blocking size and is a decent receiver.

Nice but LJ should be 20 I know I am a Eagles fan but in my opinion LJ isnt really a Te that makes you take notice but can be a decent treat in the endzone. Alge was and is still is a beast when having the right rythme with his QB

I still like L.J.'s talent, just gotta be consistent.....Alge was very good, but his QB is Vince

Good write though

thanks.....i still got to do LB's, CB's, and Safety's, so you'll get some more

L.J is a fine pass catcher except the one in the Superbowl he can't block for sh#t though.

man, crumpler was my huge fantasy dud last year.

coming from an eagles fan... witten is the best TE in the league. Heap is awesome but alittle to high imo. once again another great write up and analysis

thanks Johnson

NFL.com has Gates before Witten also. I just dont see it.

Daniels is the definition of an animal at TE. I love the guy. His name is slipping my mind right now, but I like the big @ss dude from Arizona too. Good job

Leonard Pope

i gotta say witten is the best in the league...blocking and receiving...the complete package

wow, i can't believe you just said that

I really think if Derek Anderson is as he was last year and Winslow stays health he may end up being the best Te because he can block and is like a reciever

I agree...plus Winslow is a soldier

winslow is a better receiver though hes way more athletic

he is that TC Lol

winslow is really good but he only had one good year...witten has been doin it for awhile

winslow will be the top 2 tight ends this year, behind gates...and thats a maybe. no one can cover him.

good solid list but alge should b a lil higher switch him with Lj nothin aginst Lj I like the dude but he is jst gotta stay healthy n he will b in 8 or 10. FLY HIGH EAGLES!!

real good post...to me it's a toss up between witten and gates...I'm obviousely a little biased so I gotta go with witten LOL...but regardless it's still a good list

Now I know we havent seen much of him but does anyone think Brent Celek would be in the Top 20-30 list come next yr or the yr after or he has a long way 2 go... Cuz for his first yr he is Solid an if he played more and more than we could really see what he is all about I like Celek i think he should take Schobels Spot.... i dont know if Kris Wilson will be 3rd or what he can do i havent heard much about himm but yes i agree with this post LJ. Smith is where he is at he needs 2 stay healthy and consistent.... i wonder if the Eagles will play alot of Double Tight End pass plays... like they use 2 do with Chad Lewis and LJ Smith.... i loved Chad lewis nothing against Smith

very nice I see Winslow at 1 but i guess he has to prove that a bit still, Gates can catch it all but can't block like Witten and Gonzo. These top 5 are kinda like 3-6 in the WR category. Anyone would be happy to have any of these guys

Winslow had a great season last year but I have to say complete package.. Gates is the man .. he puts up WR numbers and when LT doesn't have the ball .. he does, thats a lot of work for a TE.. dig the list man.

thanks

nice list overall obviously a bronco te has to be top 10 but hey its your right tonys got game im surprised tony isnt like no 2 but i love the love for dallas clark nice list overall lj will be higher next season and ben atson is a tad higher lol

hey, I didn't have a Bronco on the running back list :)

haha i didnt see that one, but dont worry selvin is a good back 2000 seems a stretch but hey go for it

just hopefully he says healthy

good list, Gates, if healthy, the tops this year upcoming, as the all- around TE...Clark is lethal and has good hands...Watson, inconsistent and injury prone, but still young and 08' could be good year for him, if Pollard as other TE blocks well, and frees up Watson to roam more...TC, dead on with Graham, miss his top-notch blocking...Heap, Miller, Crumpler, all these dudes solid, can't go wrong...Shockey I like position you put him in, as he is a head case that has a lot to prove again...Boss due for real breakout year too...can't wait for CB list

witten is the man right now. gates good, but not as tough. witten is the old throwback-type (Ditka) tight end with more speed.

TC,

Good article but I think you have to have Randy McMicheal on the list somewhere. I have him at #10 actually, projecting 60-750-6

Saunders relies heavily on the TE and if the Rams line can block well enough, and that's an IF, to allow McMicheal to go out in routes he can have a nice year. He is an excellent pass catcher and you saw what Cooley did in this offense. With Avery getting time and Holt or Avery (on deep routes) occupying the safety McMicheal can find room to make catches over the middle.

my man, owen daniels , is poised for a breakout year look out afc.
