According to Mike Garafolo of The Star-Ledger, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers' third-round pick Alex Smith is on his way to East Rutherford to meet with the New York Giants. Smith, who was most recently with the New England Patriots and cut at yesterday's deadline, originally cost the Pats a fifth-round pick, but didn't really seem comfortable in their offensive system and with the addition of Michael Matthews, became expendable. In his four seasons with Tampa Bay, Smith hauled in 129 passes for 1,252 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also caught a touchdown pass against the Giants during the 2007 wildcard game. Although his visit doesn't mean a signing is imminent, it doesn't bode well for Darcy Johnson...who surprisingly beat out Matthews for the final tight end spot on the Giants roster.
