His Day Is Coming!

Ex Huskies QB Jake Locker was the backup for the Titans this season and with good reason since ex-Seattle QB Matt Hasselbeck had a solid season.

Still, Locker did get some action in this last season and I think he showed that he will be a legit NFL QB and that Tennessee made a solid move by taking him in the first round of the 2011 draft.

I really feel that Locker showed enough for the Titans to feel proud of their first overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.

FIVE NICE things Jake Locker did for Tennessee this year that shows he’ll make a great NFL pro quarterback…

1. Pro from day One

Right when the lockout started Locker was ready to go and he won over his teammates from the beginning. He was the first Titans’ player to show up at training camp and he came with his playbook in hand and that impressed his teammates.

2. He played well when given the chance

When Hasselbeck was injured Locker came in and played well. In his first action he came in facing a solid Atlanta team and he was 9/19 for 140 yards with 2 TD and 0 INT.

In a December game facing the Saints he passed for a season high 282 yards with 1 TD.

3. No Interceptions

 While the rookie QB’s of Cam Newton, Blaine Gabbert, and Andy Dalton got all the press and Newton and Dalton had good seasons each struggled with the INT. Rookies at the QB position tend to throw a lot of picks, but this season Locker had 0 INT in 66 pass attempts.

He showed his ability to stay in the pocket and take a hit and not just throw the ball away to the other team.

4. Ability outside the pocket

Locker showed in the pre-season that he can get it done outside the pocket with a 45-yard TD bomb after scrambling outside the pocket. He showed he can sling it when the play breaks down and still find the open receiver.

5. Locker can run the ball

Those of us in the PNW already knew this. But did the rest of America? Locker has the ability to run the ball and this season he rushed for 56 yards with 1 TD and picked up 4 first downs with legs.

He averaged a legit 7 yards per carry this season and in the Saints game he showed his toughness scoring on a short run and got nailed on the goal line, but still held onto the ball.

Locker did not see a lot of time on the field this season with only 66 passing attempts in 5 games, but when he was in he played well.

Newton and Dalton got all the press this season, but I don’t think it will be long before Locker is the best rookie QB from the 2011 class.
