The Tennessee Titans have pretty much handed their starting quarterback job to second-year pro Jake Locker. Well, Locker went out and had his first career start on Friday night and it didn’t go so well.

Against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Locker completed just 4 of 11 passes for 21 yards and an interception. Meanwhile, veteran Matt Hasselbeck – who is the other guy gunning for the starting spot – completed 4 of 5 passes for 29 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions.

Locker had a chance to break out on Friday night and take a big lead in the race to be the Titans’ starting quarterback, but he didn’t do that. Nor did he do anything close. If anything, he may have lost ground to Hasselbeck.

When the Titans made Locker the No. 8 pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, they were hoping they had their quarterback of the future. Unfortunately, the accuracy issues that plagued him in college, have followed the Washington product to the NFL.

As a rookie in 2011, Locker played in five games. He completed just 51.5 percent of his passes, for 542 yards, with four touchdowns and no interceptions. He also had eight rushes for 56 yards and a touchdown.

Locker must figure out a way to complete more passes, it’s that simple. If he wants to make it as an NFL quarterback he’s got to figure out a way to improve his accuracy. Right now the 24-year-old still looks like a project with a long way to go, not a blossoming star.
