Absolutely nothing is going right for the Houston Texans this season. Locked in a five-game slide where most of quarterback Matt Schaub’s completions have been Pick-Sixes, the team was dealt a crushing blow when linebacker Brian Cushing was lost for the season in a 17-16 loss to Kansas City. That was coming off a weekend where the city’s most iconic and beloved football figure, former Oilers coach Bum Phillips, passed away at the age of 90. Sadly, it appears things have yet to bottom out. The Texans waived three players Monday — running back Cierre Wood and linebackers Sam Montgomery and Willie Jefferson — for a “violation of team rules,” which is typically a college-level excuse for booting someone from a team. As reported by ESPN.com Texans reporter Tania Ganguli, that team rule was apparently “don’t smoke pot at the team hotel the night before a game, especially when all three of you are rookies.” Jefferson’s agent told ESPN.com that the players were merely smoking a cigar — because who doesn’t share a good cigar amongst friends? — and that a grievance may be filed. Apparently casting himself as the Buck Weaver of the Black and Mild Scandal, Montgomery claims he merely walked into the room where the other two were smoking a cigar. The move was the most moronic for Wood, who was in line to see some playing time thanks to the hamstring injury suffered by starter Arian Foster on Sunday. It wasn’t particularly wise for Jefferson, either. He had played his way onto the roster as an undrafted free agent out of Stephen F. Austin — where he had ended up after getting kicked out of Baylor for passing out in a Taco Bell drive-thru while high. (I can’t make this up). Montgomery hasn’t played despite being a highly-touted third-round pick who surprised some by even falling that far in the draft. I guess now we know why. If all three players weren’t rookies, and the Texans hadn’t lost five straight, would any of this be happening? Probably not. But as they say, you have to know your role. Clearly they did not, and now have to hope someone’s willing to take a chance on them to pursue NFL dreams that were quickly thrown away. Meanwhile, Texans fans can take solace knowing they aren’t the Bucs/Jaguars/Giants/Vikings.
