After supposedly swooping in as a late contestant in the Peyton Manning sweepstakes, the Texans now decided to take themselves out of the running.

On Tuesday, just minutes before free agency began, Texans owner Bob McNair shot down the Manning-to-Houston rumors, saying the team is content with Matt Schaub as its starter, the Houston Chronicle reports.

“We’ve got a quarterback whose foot’s going to be fine,” McNair said at a news conference after his hour-long appearance on the Texans All-Access Show on Sports Radio 610. “He’s got a great arm, and he can take us to a championship. We’re in good shape in that regard.

“We’re more concerned with keeping our core players and trying to re-sign them as opposed to bringing in someone else.”

When asked about the prospect of Manning landing with the division-rival Titans, McNair seemed unconcerned — and maybe even a bit cocky.

“It really doesn’t matter,” McNair said with a laugh. “We beat him when he was healthy, and we’ll do it again.

While the Texans were reportedly near the top of Peyton’s wishlist, which started a firestorm of speculation Monday, the club isn’t willing to move on from Schaub, a dynamic passer who’s rehabbing from Lisfranc surgery.

They’ll pay him his scheduled $500,000 workout bonus, while allocating the remaining funds in an attempt to re-sign prized free agent Mario Williams.

“We’d like to have Mario,” McNair said. “Unfortunately, a lot of other teams would like to have him, too. It depends on how much they’re willing to pay. We have (salary cap) limitations that constrain us, but we’re going to do everything we possibly can to keep him here.
