Bull Pen Dirt:
I flew solo to the Prom my senior year in high school. Not because I couldn't find a date--I actually had one, but dumped her after a change of heart (sorry Lauren if you're reading this)--but rather, I just didn't find someone I really wanted to go with. I mean think about it. Proms aren't exactly cheap. So why spend a ton of money on someone you didn't really want to go with in the first place?
Here's the point.
The Texans wanted to go to Prom with Cedric Benson. Benson found another date, and now the Texans have to make a decision. Should they find a replacement date in free agency, or should they go to prom alone and see if they can get lucky--with the draft.
They can find another date if they wanted to, sure. They're an upstart franchise on the verge of big things. They have an established coaching staff whose run-first philosophy guarantees that every running back on the roster will get opportunities. They should be very high on every free agent running backs' most-eligible bachelor list. But at this point, they would be doing what I almost did--take a date just to have one.
Whoever they took at this point wouldn't be someone they really wanted to go with. How do I know this? Because while they were trying to hook up with Benson, every other running back worth taking found a date of their own. The running backs that are left just aren't worth it. They're the snotty fat girls that rent a limo and show up to prom together so they can spend the whole night reassuring each other that they're beautiful and actively deny the reality that no one asked them because they're fat, ugly, and have bad attitudes.
Scouts Inc. lists the following as the top 5 remaining running backs in free agency:
Jamel White: Hasn't played since 2005
Duece McAllister: Durable like fine china
LaMont Jordan: See McAllister, Duece; also currently in negotiations with the Cardinals
Kevin Jones: Texans didn't want him when they needed him in '07, why now?
Michael Pittman: Another durability concern. Did I mention he's 33?
Behind those guys are names like Reuben Droughns, Deshaun Foster and Rudi Johnson. Impressive, huh.
There's nothing wrong with going solo, Texans. I did, and it worked out fine. I ended up hooking up with one of the cooler girls at prom...and I didn't have to pay for dinner either. I'd say wait until the draft and see what you can dig up. The Texans have a good history with the draft, so it's very likely they'll get what they're looking for.
Fly solo, Texans. You'll be glad you did.
