A week after signing veteran Jake Delhomme, and two days after fifth-round pick T.J. Yates won his first NFL start, the Houston Texans have waived quarterback Kellen Clemens, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports. Clemens was signed to a one-year contract after the team lost quarterback Matt Schaub to a season-ending foot injury. The former second-round pick out of Oregon was inactive when Matt Leinart was lost to a broken collarbone, which prompted the signing of Delhomme last week. Inactive for a second consecutive week, the Texans got a steady performance from Yates and, according to McClain, are going to sign 41-year-old Jeff Garcia to be the No. 3 behind Yates and Delhomme. For his two weeks on the 53-man roster, Clemens earned nearly $81,000 in pretax income.

Texans Waive Kellen Clemens

Jeff Garcia signs on with Houston

The Texans are desperate for a backup to T.J. Yates, and now have Jeff Garcia on the roster to go with Jake Delhomme, who signed with the team last week.

OVERREACTING TO T.J. YATES!!!!!

I WANT TO! But no, let’s not. Except that we can all say with confidence now that Yates>Leinart. Small sample size for both, but based on that sample – yeah, it’s done. There are three things that give me a really good feeling about TJ Yates going forward, based on how he did against a solid Atlanta defense (excellent against the run, though not so great against the passâ€...

UNC: Why Not T.J. Yates?

A nice feature from Fox NFL Sunday on former UNC QB T.J. Yates as he prepared to make his first start for the Houston Texans.   Yates was thrust into the starting role when Matt Schaub injured his foot and backup Matt Leinert broke his collarbone last week. Yates filled in for Leinert to close out a win over Jacksonville. This past Sunday vs the Falcons, Yates started and performed...

Jeff Garcia claims Kellen Clemens’ job

Earlier this afternoon, the Texans announced that quarterback Kellen Clemens has been waived.  The move left the Texans, who have carried three quarterbacks all year, with only two. They won’t have two for long. John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports that the Texans will sign veteran Jeff Garcia. Garcia, who played for quarterbacks coach…

Texans Slow Down FalconsÂ’ Playoff Push With 17-10 Win

T.J. Yates received ample help from a stout defense and running back Arian Foster, who became the first back to rush for more than 100 yards against the Falcons in 15 games , as the Texans defeated Atlanta Falcons 17-10 before a crowd of 71,545 on Sunday at Reliant Stadium. Yates, a 24-year old rookie, arguably out-played Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, who was under duress for most...

Falcons squander another chance to take control

After squandering another chance to take control of their playoff fate, the Atlanta Falcons are beginning to realize this is the way it's going to be. In all likelihood, the postseason race will come down to the final week. The Falcons (7-5) are right in the thick of the wild-card race, tied with Detroit and Chicago, but their hopes of repeating as NFC South champions are beginning...

Hobbled Texans still on top of AFC

Even with a third-string QB, the Texans keep on winning. T.J. Yates led Houston to a 17-10 win over the Falcons, and Chris Burke says that no team is playing with more toughness.

NFL Games to Watch, Week 14 Edition

1:00 Houston Texans VS Cincinnati Bengals   The Texans are coming off of a HUGE win against the Atlanta Falcons; but don't let the W fool you. T.J. Yates was under 200 yards passing, under 50% completion rating, and he lost a fumble. If it wasn’t for 2 early interceptions by an off Matt Ryan, and Falcons receivers dropping every pass that came their way, Houston could easily...

Depleted Texans continue winning; Packers stay perfect with late drive

HOUSTON — Apparently, it's going to take more than injuries to star players to derail the Houston Texans. Rookie T.J. Yates threw a touchdown pass in his first NFL start, Arian Foster rushed for 111 yards and Houston overcame another injury to Andre Johnson to beat Atlanta 17-10 on Sunday. ...

Texans take big step toward playoffs, Falcons miss a big chance

The Houston Texans look like they can win the AFC South no matter who’s at quarterback. And the Atlanta Falcons look like they’re just about out of the NFC South race. Down to third-string quarterback T.J. Yates, Houston had a heavy dose of Arian Foster and a great defensive effort and managed to pull off…

FO: Orlovsky #4

Football Outsiders ranked Orlovsky's performance against New England at #4 this week in terms of DYAR: Best known for running out the back of the end zone for one of the funniest safeties ever while playing for the 0-16 2008 Detroit Lions, Orlovsky spent the past two seasons on the bench of the Houston Texans. The team that is currently starting T.J. Yates at quarterback...
