Houston Texans receiver Andre Johnson is one of the NFL’s preeminent good guys, and he does a lot of fine work through his charity, the Andre Johnson Charitable Foundation.  One of the cooler things he does this time of year is his annual Toys “R” Us shopping spree, where he takes a bunch of at-risk kids selected from Houston’s Child Protective Services and lets them run wild for 80 seconds, filling their carts with whatever they can get their hands on. This year Johnson’s foundation hosted a dozen kids for the shopping spree, and when all was said and done, those 12 little gaffers did some serious damage to the tune of $19,521 dollars, all of which was picked up by Johnson and his foundation.  As you can see, nearly $20,000 in toys can make for some seriously large receipts. Said Johnson (via the Houston Texans Official Site)… “You hear a minute and twenty seconds and you don’t think that’s a long time, but you’d be surprised by what these kids can put into their buckets,” Johnson said after his foundation picked up the $19,521 tab on a receipt about a mile long. “I think it’s probably the best one because you get to see the kids really enjoy it,” Johnson said. “That’s what this season is about.  It’s something I look forward to. The kids are happy, they get what they want for Christmas, and that’s all that matters. “ “All the kids that have been here every year have gotten gifts for their brothers and sisters or cousins or whoever,” he said. “It just shows what they go through that they think about others. It shows what type of kids they are. “A lot of these kids get discouraged because of where they grew up and things like that. I grew up in a single-parent home and I was fortunate to achieve my goals. So, whatever goals you have, just keep them out in front of you, don’t let anybody distract you away from them, because there will be distractions that try to detour you away from your goals. That’s the biggest thing.”  Good on Johnson for giving back to the Houston community like this, and kudos to him for giving some kids a decent Christmas during a particularly difficult time in their lives.
