I’ve always felt that being the 2nd quarterback is both the best and worst job. Best because you get to roam the sidelines of a NFL team and not really worry about much and get paid well. Worst, because if QB1 gets injured, it’s your show. It’s both the most important and most inconsequential position on a football team. You may never play, but if you do (and not in a blowout) you have to be the man. The Giants have a little battle for this honor. Who gets to back up Eli?
THE CANDIDATES:
- Sage Rosenfels
- David Carr
SAGE ROSENFELS:
Sage was with the team last season, and in the first preseason game, played well despite suffering from strep throat. He also holds kicks. Sage is smart, knows the offense, and is a good veteran presence. He’s had a good camp and, if needed to start, he can play. His only extended playing time, 5 starts in 2007, he threw for 1,684 yards, 15 TDs, 12 INTs and an 84.4 passer rating. Solid numbers. Sage won’t wow you, and he can manage the offense.
DAVID CARR:
Carr was the backup before Sage. He hasn’t played in preseason yet, but he has not been good in camp. Carr, a former number 1 overall pick, never got to show off his talents behind an awful line in Houston, and hasn’t recovered from the beating. He hasn’t played regularly since 2006, when he threw for 2,767 yards, 11 TDs and 12 INTs. Carr obviously has talent, but I think all the beatings have gotten to him. He is a veteran, he knows the offense, and, if needed for extended playing time, might be a better option.
AND THE WINNER IS…
Sage Rosenfels. While long term Carr might have more success, I think Sage would be better at managing the game in the hypothetical absence of Eli. Carr has more talent, but Sage uses his more effectively. Carr is a wild card. You might get great, you might not. With Sage, you know he’s going to be steady, and in a backup, that’s what I want.
