LeSean McCoy will be a critical piece to the success of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2012.

Training camp is now under a week away for the Philadelphia Eagles, and as they gear up to get going, we thought we’d take a look at the 5 Most Important Eagles in 2012.

Michael Vick – It goes without saying that the success of the Philadelphia Eagles is undeniably tied to Michael Vick. His health is a huge question this season, and whether he can maintain it or not for the season is the source of much speculation. Of equal importance, though not many people are talking about it, is whether Vick can cut down the turnovers this year. If Vick is healthy and continues to turn the ball over, the Eagles are over. If he cuts down the turnovers but only plays in 11 games, nothing is a sure thing. Vick MUST stay healthy AND cut out the turnovers. It’s non-negotiable.

DeMeco Ryans – Ryans is expected to undo years of the Eagles’ ineptitude at linebacker. He will NOT do this himself, but his presence alone may be a huge boost. There are a lot of expectations for DeMeco Ryans, and the hope is that he’ll live up to them. Ryans was still recovering from a catastrophic Achilles’ tendon tear last season, but was slower and not nearly as effective as he had been in the past. Part of that could have been the injury and part of it could have been playing in a 3-4 defense when he’d played in a 4-3 his entire career. Ryans will return to the 4-3 and he will have another year of recovery from the injury. His play may just dictate the success of the Eagles’ defense. It’s crucial he plays well.

Nnamdi Asomugha – Asomugha was the prize of last year’s free agent class, and it was a victory Eagles fans treasured because it kept Asomugha from the hated clutches of the Dallas Cowboys. In the end, that’s all it accomplished last year. His play was not what fans were expecting and he failed to click with the other corners on the field. Conflicting styles and conflicting personalities railroaded an Eagles secondary that was supposed to be a strength and exposed it as a weakness. This year, the defense will be more tailored to what Asomugha is used to playing in. Hopefully he will rebound and play like fans expected him to last year. Now that there are two press coverage corners in the secondary, hopefully the coverage will be more cohesive.

DeSean Jackson – Ok. The contract crap is settled. He got his money and now he’s got his record company. Blah blah blah. DeSean Jackson has to put the bad attitude and sulking that we have seen over the past couple of seasons behind him. Jackson’s numbers last year weren’t that bad, but nonetheless he is going to have to be better and be an igniter on offense. He needs to get back to his big play making ability that we’ve seen in the past. When DeSean Jackson is on, he’s one of the best in the NFL. When he’s not on, he’s trouble. Hopefully his contract will put him on his game.

LeSean McCoy – McCoy had an amazing season last year and established himself as one of the best running backs in the NFL. Now he’s paid like one too. Having McCoy brings an added dimension to the Eagles offense that they haven’t had in a while. He brings the threat of a successful running game to the table, and that’s only a good thing for the passing game. McCoy only needs to do what he did last year, or some semblance of it, to help the Eagles be successful. I’m not sure if he’ll score 20 touchdowns, but with Shady, nothing is out of the question.

The Eagles enter camp with a ton of talent and all the potential in the world. The pieces are all there, now they just have to come together. They didn’t last year, but the core of this team is getting another chance. If it doesn’t happen this year, there could be wholesale changes throughout the entire organization.
