Remember when you got really amped even in the preseason to watch the Giants take on the Jets in a battle of New York?
The teams wanted each other’s blood, and the game usually mirrored that.
The Giants-Jets showdown is tomorrow night, but it’s almost like nobody really cares about the game. Most fans and analysts are too busy stuck on three simple words:
Timothy Richard Tebow.
Ok, so really just two — Tim Tebow — suffice. This whole offseason has been a Tebow media frenzy, taking the attention off the Giants completely.
I’m actually a big fan of Tebow. After reading his book, I like what he stands for and how he carries himself.
Granted, he may not be the most talented quarterback, but he is a competitor and did win a playoff game last year. If the Jets use him in the wildcat package like they say they will, he can be a valuable commodity.
The problem here is that there are countless Tebow supporters saying he should be starting over Mark Sanchez and countless Tebow detractors — Boomer Esiason included — saying Tebow should just be cut altogether.
Every day during training camp, it’s been Tebow did this, or Tebow did that, or Tebow is running without a shirt on.
Meanwhile, the Giants have once again remained under the radar. It’s amazing how the reigning Super Bowl champions are receiving less attention than a team that didn’t even make the playoffs last season.
Once again, Tebow.
Tomorrow’s game will be all about how Sanchez and Tebow perform and if the Jets implement some of their wildcat plays. Very little focus will be on seeing if David Wilson can turn in another solid performance or if Prince Amukamara can play a consistent game.
In both of their Super Bowl runs, the Giants were an under-the-radar team. That is exactly how Tom Coughlin likes to operate.
While the Jets are worrying about who will be playing quarterback, the Giants will be busy actually winning games.
Again, I hope Tebow does whatever the Jets ask him to do extremely well. But it almost seems that tomorrow’s game will feature the “Tebows” vs. the Giants rather than the Jets vs. Giants.
