Finally all the talk about where quarterback Alex Smith will play in 2013 has been answered. The San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs have come to terms that will send Smith to the Chiefs for a second round pick in 2013 and a conditional pick in 2014.After posting a 2-14 record in 2012 with two backup quarterbacks from other teams; new head coach Andy Reid seems to think he can get the Chiefs back in the Top of the AFC West with yet another backup. The worst thing that could have happened in 2012 was for Smith to get injured and that is exactly what happened. 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh wasted no time naming Colin Kaepernick the starter after he showed he was capable of playing at a Super Bowl level. Granted a player showed not lose their job based on injuries, but it was only time that Harbaugh was going to replace Smith. It was clear the offense that Smith was running versus the one Kaepernick started running; that Smith had a safety valve on him on when it came to plays that were called for him to run.Until Harbaugh showed up in 2011; Smith had pretty much played himself out of the NFL. In his five seasons before Harbaugh Smith had completed 864 of his 1,514 passes for 9,399 yards, 53 touchdowns, 53 interceptions and 34 fumbles. With Harbaugh he has completed 426 passes out of 663 for 4,881 yards, 32 touchdowns, 10 interceptions, and 11 fumbles. He was also leading the lead in passing until he was benched.Smith has proven that he can play with the way his number changed after an offensive minded coach to over leading him; but he can't stay on the field. Smith has only played all 16 games twice during his 7 year career; and his latest injury looks like the final injury that the 49ers were interested in dealing with when it came to Smith. For the Sake of Andy Reid; Smith better pan out or Chiefs fans are going to be booing Reid at of town faster than Eagles fans were. The Chiefs have the top overall draft pick, and even though there is not a quarterback worth spending the pick on in 2013 like there was in 2012; they could have used the pick they gave up to get a quarterback of the future.Seems like the Chiefs will never learn that winning with other teams backups is impossible. That is why they are made backups in the first place.
