We’ve all seen this story, we know Decker and Thomas can make great catches from the veteran that is Peyton Manning, we know that Von Miller can make impressive tackles and make juke-moves to get to whichever player has the ball. What we haven’t seen is a running game that doesn’t drop the ball, a defense without Miller and one that looked soft against the Rams (not the second place defense we saw last season). Proving that even with the ideal dream team of talent there is still mistakes to be made and improvements needed. Eric Decker continued to connect with Peyton Manning being the teams top receiver going for 66 yards. Thomas was a close second at 64 yards including one catch in the corner of the endzone. Long overdue was finally being able to see the Montee Ball that we saw at Wisconsin. Now I understand more of the hype and why he is a potential starter so soon in his professional career. Montee Ball making a run (Photo Credit: Denver Broncos) Even though he made a few rookie mistakes, which were expected, I was impressed with his speed and quick thinking abilities. The fact that he got a lot of reps with Manning and Osweiler including a touchdown should make fans hopeful for his potential. Ball should hopefully get even more reps considering Ronnie Hillman continued to make mistakes and had yet another fumble. This isn’t acceptable for the second year running back and if what Adam Gase said last week about players who drop the ball not playing, Hillman may have something to be worried about. The defense in all honestly looked sloppy. There were tackles that should have been made and catches that should have been stopped, this comes with the territory of learning during the preseason. However at this point in the season it should look better. Special teams made a huge mistake on the Rams’ first drive that almost resulted in a punt return touchdown, and did lead to a touchdown on the very next play. These plays should be no-brainers at this point. It is preseason and the Broncos did come out on top which in the end is all that matters but once the regular season starts these little mistakes need to be resolved.
