NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Just when things seemed to be going great for the Lingerie Football League (like last fall with Sean Salisbury doing color commentary), news drops that the fledgling operation will shutter its U.S. operation until April 2013. Oh, of course, the LFL will still have a four-team league in Canada and games in Australia. The U.S., however, will be left lingerie-less. This is like the biggest slap in the face to the U.S. – ever. We invented the game, dammit!

Never one to drop big news like this into the laps of the L.A. Times, the LFL confirmed yesterday that there will be no 2012 U.S. lingerie football via an email from commissioner Mitchell Mortaza to Examiner.com.

“Yes, we have shifted the LFL US schedule, because we believe ultimately LFL Football in the US and abroad is a better product in the Spring and Summer months. This extended hiatus also enables our LFL US teams to focus on recruiting and ultimately continuing to teach the fundamentals of the game.”

“This hiatus also enables us to take this great game of ours international with the premiere of LFL Canada and in 2013 the kickoff of LFL Australia. We are focused to not simply resting on being called the ‘fastest growing sports league in the US’ (BusinessWeek) but the fastest growing sports franchise in the world.” said Mitchell Mortaza.

This might be news to hopefuls prepared to attend tryouts this weekend in Minnesota. You can tryout, make the team and not play a down until 2013. It’s kinda like being Sean Payton. And to think, this happens just as this league was getting serious and drawing the likes of former/current Vikings Jim Kleinsausser, Phil Loadholt, Chris Lewinski, Adam Haayer and Jake Sullivan to practice.

jQuery(function($){$("a img.gallery-wall-fade").hover(function(){$(this).stop().animate({opacity:.5},{queue:false,duration:400});},function(){$(this).stop().animate({opacity:1},{queue:false,duration:400});});});

Look, this probably doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things. We’ll figure out something to pass the time.

The LFL has been in talks with a couple cable channels to air a ‘reality’ series featuring league notables. It would be a ‘Hard Knocks’ style show with the common themes thrown in like the girls go clubbing and hit on guido guys with bad spray tans.

Anyway, start making alternative plans this year. Your DVR won’t be recording LFL games on Friday nights.
