The Good, The Bad and The Ugly       Saints 35 @ Buccaneers 28   10/21/2012   By Eric Judd   @ericjuddTSHQ     The Good   Football! Go That Way! The Tampa Bay Offense. The Saints won? Oh right, like you had any doubt. You expect the New Orleans offense to fire on all cylinders. Tampa Bay on the other hand, not so much. Free Agent acquisition Vincent Jackson goes for 216, and Doug Martin looked like the first rounder he was thought to be. This is a good sign for Tampa Bay. Not this year, but for the future. Quietly, the Buccaneers have built a solid core of skill players, even if Josh Freeman is bipolar on the football field. Atlanta will run away with the NFC South this season. But, maybe, just maybe, the Buccaneers have lined themselves up for a very solid future. For a very long time.     The Bad   YAY!! wait… Son of a *****! The final play. I’m sorry, it’s a cheap way to win a football game. I know, it’s in the rules. A quarterback scrambles out of the pocket, you can make contact with the receiver. I’m not a proponent for any more pro-offense rules changes. And yes, it was a smart, heads-up play by Isa Abdul-Quddus. But, after driving down the field, final play of the game, you call a cheap, albeit correct, penalty? Letdown. Bigtime.     The Ugly   Tackle?! What is this “Tackle” you speak of… The art of defense. While both offenses were in top form, the defenses were appalling. Teams were scoring at will. And this wasn’t Manning(either one)-Brady. Aaron Rodgers wasn’t anywhere to be seen. Yes, Drew Brees is a Hall-of-Fame quarterback, he also plays on a 1 win team with a interim backup, backup coach. If either one of these teams hopes to compete with the Atlanta Falcons, some serious strides need to be made on the defensive side of the football. Expect both these teams to focus on defense in the off-season. These offenses can be well-oiled machines. These defenses are rusty buckets.     The Sequel   I might be missing an “A” in my name, but I am still a bad ss. Johnthan Banks CB Mississippi St. Finding the top defensive back in college football this season has been a difficult task. The favorites haven’t distanced themselves and no real unknown has shot to the forefront. Johnthan Banks has always been in the discussion. He’s a tall CB 6’2” with room to add strength for the NFL. He will shine at the NFL combine with elite quickness serious jumping ability and one of the quickest second steps in college football. Very few NFL cornerbacks can go from Zero to 6th gear like Banks. He is a threat to return any INT for 6 the other way, and is a dangerous kick returner. Tipping the scales under 190, Banks needs some work in his run support, but you don’t draft a cover corner to take on running backs. Both New Orleans and Tampa Bay need serious help on defense and a great place to start is in the secondary. Johnthan Banks would be a great addition to these two NFC South teams, and could be in play for both in the middle of round 1.
