By now, you should know where the Bucs stand in regards to their questionable pass defense. Then there are the constant reports and speculation of the potential trade with the Jets for cornerback Darrelle Revis. Tampa Bay has pretty much thrown all its cards into acquiring Revis but why is there so much pressure to upgrade the secondary? Several reports label general manager Mark Dominik as being on the hot seat this season. Since becoming the general manager in 2009, Tampa Bay has a 24-40 record with no playoff appearances. More importantly, he also holds a streak for questionable draft picks. However, Dominik rebounded nicely last offseason with the free agent signings and the draft. But how much of that was influenced by head coach Greg Schiano? The Buccaneers hope to reach the playoffs in 2013 after finishing 7-9 last season. Many put the blame on quarterback Josh Freeman but the emphasis on the secondary by the team further proves that Freeman under center was not the main reason for their losing season. At least for the moment it doesn’t. Now an upgraded secondary isn’t going to fully guarantee success either. There was also a pass rush that was practically non-existent which allowed time for quarterbacks and receivers to pick the Bucs defense apart. The team is riding high on beliefs that a healthy Adrian Clayborn, a full-time starting Da’Quan Bowers, and a second straight season of 16 games from Gerald McCoy will change that. Again, lots of questions. Looking ahead though, you see why the Bucs are focusing on the secondary. They signed free agent safety Dashon Goldson at the start of free agency and if they acquire Revis, the secondary already looks a lot better. And given the upcoming schedule of opponents, they will be busy covering receivers. Here is a list of some of the teams and notable quarterbacks with their receivers the Bucs will face this upcoming season: 49ers: QB Kolin Kaepernick, WR Michael Crabtree Dolphins: QB Ryan Tannehill, WR Mike Wallace, WR Brian Hartline Cardinals: QB Carson Palmer, WR Larry Fitzgerald Patriots: QB Tom Brady, WR-TE-OL-etc. (basically whoever Brady throws to) Seahawks: QB Russel Wilson, WR Sidney Rice, WR Percy Harvin, WR, Golden Tate Lions: QB Matt Stafford, WR Calvin Johnson Then there is of course who the Saints, Panthers, and Falcons have throwing and catching the football. Many have questioned the Buccaneers approach on how they have addressed the cornerback position this offseason. Acquiring Goldson was definitely a plus, but if they acquire Revis as well, the secondary will already be a huge improvement over what they had last season.
