We all know the wide majority of the NFL preseason is totally and utterly worthless.  This is especially true for the fourth and final preseason game, when teams are only playing the extreme lower rungs of the depth chart.  However, the Kansas City Chiefs are using that opportunity to allow one fan to become the sideline reporter for their local broadcast for the second half.  Why not?  It's not like any professionals will be on the field or anything.  Finally, you have your chance to be the next Erin Andrews, Heather Cox, Pam Oliver, or Craig Sager in the Chiefs' Rock the Mic contest:

Armchair quarterbacks rarely get to break the game down like this.  Enter the Chiefs "Rock the Mic" contest and you just might make your television debut while reporting live from the sidelines at an upcoming game.

To celebrate our 50th year in Kansas City, the Chiefs are awarding one grand prize winner the opportunity to join Trent Green, Paul Burmeister, and the award-winning 65 Toss Power Trap Productions crew at Lambeau Field!

You’ll join us on the sidelines as our second half reporter during the Chiefs fourth and final preseason game as an integral part of the team that provides the Chiefs Kingdom with inside information on game day.  Starting July 16th, contestants 18 and older can register by filling out an official entry form at www.kcchiefs50.com.

Some teams choose a helmet decal or a field logo or a ticket giveaway to celebrate 50 years as a franchise in one city... the Chiefs however are willing to put you on an NFL sideline to give reports for a real NFL broadcast.  And presumably, they're going to send you to a road game in Green Bay at Lambeau Field to do it.

There's a glass half-full and half-empty viewpoint on this story I suppose.  The Chiefs are giving one fan the opportunity of a lifetime... or confirming the growing thought that sideline reports are well and truly unnecessary and we might as well just have fun with it while we can.

This is something Chiefs fans (and presumably anyone else) will have to try for though as applicants have to send a one minute demo reel.  Three finalists will be selected with the winner being chosen via a fan vote.  For all the hopefuls out there looking to kick-start their sideline reporting career, we'd advise not emulating any of these...
