Is the Madden Curse real? How could something as innocent as a player appearing on a video game box consistently result in sports tragedy? When the popular conspiracy theory first started floating around, it sounded utterly ridiculous. But over the years such an eerie string of unfortunate circumstances has surrounded the game’s cover athletes that one can’t help but question the curse’s validity. In fact, with my shaky, wrecked-from-football knees, I’m scared to even buy the game at this point. As for the NFL’s superstars, why even tempt fate and appear on the cover? Why take that chance?

Up until now, only four of the 13 cover athletes seem unaffected by the “Curse.” The two that publicly stated they didn’t believe in the curse — Donovan McNabb and Shaun Alexander — suffered serious injuries during that season. You hear that? That’s the Curse saying don’t you dare doubt me, suckas. The first cover boy, Garrison Hearst, was out for two seasons after gracing the box. It’s almost like the ghost of Pat Summerall (wait, is he still alive?) is haunting these fellas for replacing his old partner on the cover of his own game. Pat would be one scary effing ghost with that voice, too. Patergeist.

Anyway, since this is the most popular sports video game title in the history of, well, history, we felt it appropriate to examine the curse a little more closely. Besides, what better time to do so than immediately following the release of Madden 11. This infographic is part of our new, ongoing partnership with Infographic World. They’ll be dropping a couple of these FanSided exclusives we’re helping them dream up every month, which we’re thrilled about since we feel they are the “Madden” of infographics companies.
