ATLANTA - DECEMBER 06: Michael Vick #7 of the Philadelphia Eagles rushes upfield against the Atlanta Falcons at Georgia Dome on December 6, 2009 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)
It’s very easy to pile on Michael Vick after his 4 interception performance against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. Anyone who reads this site with any regularity knows without any doubt that I’m no fan of Michael Vick. Never have been, probably never will be. The problem is that Michael Vick is the Quarterback of the Eagles, which happens to be the team I love and would give anything to see win a Super Bowl. Because of that, I find myself very conflicted. You see, I would love to see what Nick Foles could do as the QB of this team, but Foles is a rookie, and chances are no matter how well he plays, unless there is divine intervention, he’s not likely going to lead this team to a Super Bowl win as a rookie. If (more likely when) we see Nick Foles, it will probably mean that Vick is injured. As much as I may not care for Michael Vick’s style of quarterbacking, I certainly am smart enough to realize that the Eagles best chance of winning in the near term rests with Michael Vick. The Eagles demonstrated Sunday (a small sample size) that their defense is much improved from last season. There has never been any doubt about whether they have the offensive weapons. The pieces are there. The question is/was/always will be whether Vick can stay healthy and limit his turnovers, and I have zero confidence in his ability to do it. The Eagles are built to win right now. They have the talent and the ability to go all the way and win. I just don’t think they can do that with Michael Vick at the helm. I’ve heard year after year that Vick would work to limit the turnovers. With the exception of 7 games 2 seasons ago, he hasn’t done that. I’ve heard that Vick needs to protect himself more on the field. He hasn’t done that either. I’ve heard that Vick would work to pick up blitzes better and read defenses better. Haven’t seen it. So why am I supposed to believe he can help this team win? So, we arrive at my conundrum. Do i root for Michael Vick even though I have no faith in him or do I wish for Nick Foles and hope this Eagles team can keep it together for a couple of years while Foles puts his game together or the Eagles draft and develop another franchise QB? Frankly it feels like a no-win situation, and as an Eagles fan, I feel like I’ve suffered through enough of those no-win situations already.Similar Posts:
