The New England Patriots are rotten to the core

Something's rotten in Foxborough.

No team in football has been worse over the past two weeks than New England, with the Patriots being outscored 72-3. In Week 5, New England lost 34-0 to a New Orleans Saints team that had lost consecutive games entering Sunday.

Quarterback Mac Jones had a miserable game, but he isn't the only person deserving of blame in New England. The coaching staff, offensive line and special teams were terrible on Sunday, which should lead to serious questions about the direction the franchise is headed.

Owner Robert Kraft spoke this offseason about head coach Bill Belichick needing a good year, and based on how this one is going, it's not a stretch to think the Patriots could be looking at wholesale changes during the offseason.

"You either execute and win or you don't," Kraft said this offseason.

"It's very important to me that we make the playoffs," he added.

Belichick is responsible for the mess in New England as the de facto general manager. He can't lean on success with Tom Brady anymore, and the results since have been mediocre at best.

Regardless of Belichick's fate, it's almost certainly the end of the road for Jones in New England. He finished the game 12-of-22 for 110 yards and two interceptions and is 24-for-43 for 260 yards, four interceptions and three sacks over his past two games, getting benched both times.

His pick-six in the first quarter was the fourth of his career at Gillette Stadium, tied for the number of pick-sixes Brady threw his entire career at the stadium that he called home from 2002-19.

Sunday's blowout marked the first time the Patriots trailed by 20 or more in back-to-back games since 1996. The Patriots were 1-1 in those games, erasing a 21-point deficit against the New York Jets in a 31-27 win while losing 34-8 to the Broncos.

New England finished 11-5 that season and reached the Super Bowl. These Patriots, however, are headed straight toward a top-10 pick.

As Boston Globe's Ben Volin put it, this is about as bad as things have been in New England in quite some time.

In this wasted season, the only question left for New England is whom Kraft asks to get the team out of rock bottom.
