The Patriots had Dwight Freeney and John Abraham in for a visit just about a week ago today. The visits didn't result in any signings, and both moved on to meet with the Denver Broncos today. Neither of those visits ended in any commitments either, as it's likely the Broncos were just doing their due diligence in case they lose pass rusher Elvis Dumervil. Dumvervill, of course, was released by Denver after his agent failed to fax his restructured contract in on time.
So, Freeney's an insurance policy for Denver apparently but it seems like the Patriots are no longer in play according to a report from Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio.
Per a league source with knowledge of the situation, the Steelers, Ravens, and Broncos remain in play for both players. Currently, Dumervil’s decision is expected to come down to Baltimore and Denver. Whichever of that duo doesn’t get Dumervil becomes likely to land Freeney, with the Steelers as the possible alternative destination.
BEST OF MAXIM
According to Pro Football Talk, the Pittsburgh Steelers are one of three teams interested in free agent outside linebackers Elvis Dumervil and Dwight Freeney.
This isn't the first time we have heard that the Steelers have an interest in Dumervil, but it is the first time that Freeney's name has been linked to Pittsburgh.

WORTH A LOOK
The Broncos are exploring pass rushing options in the wake of Elvis Dumervil's fax fiasco. They're bringing in a few top players.
According to Michelle Beisner of the NFL Network, both Dwight Freeney and John Abraham left the Denver Broncos’ facility without a contract today.
Abraham and Freeney left Denver with no deals – per source close to situation. @denverbroncos being thorough in this process. #freeagency

Now, this doesn't exactly rule out that...
Free agent defensive end Elvis Dumervil will see what the
rest of the market has to offer after being less than pleased with the contract
proposal he recently received from the Denver Broncos. While the Broncos remain
hopeful of reaching an agreement with Dumervil, they are lining up
alternatives, as the team is set to host free agent defensive ends Dwight
Freeney and John Abraham...
The Denver Broncos have expressed interest in three free agent pass-rushers: John Abraham, Dwight Freeney, and their own former defensive end Elvis Dumervil. The Broncos will meet with the first two on Thursday; they have an offer extended to Dumervil at present.
So how do these free agent defensive ends compare? Let’s break it down –
2012 PFF Score...
The Denver Broncos want Elvis Dumervil to return to the fold, but just in case he doesn’t, the team is trying to secure plan A and B.
Adam Schefter is reporting that both Dwight Freeney and John Abraham are scheduled to visit the Broncos in the next day or so. Freeney tonight, and Abraham tomorrow or Friday.
Colts free-agent DE Dwight Freeney scheduled to visit Denver tonight...
Elvis Dumervil is clearly the cream of the free agent pass
rushing crop, but there are other veteran options available – including former
Indianapolis Colts defensive end/outside linebacker Dwight Freeney. According
to Pro Football Talk, the Denver Broncos, Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh
Steelers remain in play for both free agents.

According to ESPN’s Ed Werder, the Denver Broncos plan on bringing in free agents John Abraham and Dwight Freeney tomorrow, as they look for a replacement for Elvis Dumervil.

It also sounds like Dumvervil is ready...
The New England Patriots had Adrian Wilson, John Abraham, and Dwight Freeney come for visits, and the only one to come out with a contract that has a signature on it is Adrian Wilson. In addition, Elvis Dumervil's contract never went through, so he is a free agent. The final big name defensive end available is Osi Umenyiora (who I wrote about signing a while ago).
