Wes Welker didn’t help himself out in the Super Bowl in his cause to stay in New England.

Although it’s seems to be unwise to let Welker walk, it could very well happen.

Bill Belichick has shown that he will completely overhaul a position in one broad stroke.

The wide receiver corps is going to change in a big way. Deion Branch has lost the magic he once possessed. He is no longer is an impact player and only marginal at this point in his career. He looks slow and is getting by on sole experience.

And that’s where we stop, because there is no one else. A complicated system like the Patriots requires heady tough players who can grasp all the intricacies the offense presents. A receiver like Brandon Lloyd would be a good fit since he played with Josh McDaniels in the same system in Denver.

Tom Brady needs some outside weapons, and some speed to make his job easier. Although the production of the young tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez is impressive, if one goes down, the offense is hampered badly (we just saw it).

This offense doesn’t need a game changer as much as route runners who understand the adjustments that need to be made off certain coverages.

Jabar Gaffney comes to mind as he wastes away in Washington. He’s an intermediate target that can get deep on occasion. Here’s a guy to keep an eye on - Reggie Wayne, who will be free agent and fits the Patriots offense very nicely.

Anyway you want to spin it, an upgrade is going to happen in the offseason.
