The Sporting News had a feature today where they ranked the recent college coaching hires in a confidence poll. The poll went from 16, expected to do the best, to 1, obviously expected to do the worst. This probably wouldn't be much of a post if I didn't write another sentence and then tell you where they ranked Tuberville.  The Sporting News ranked Oregon's new coach Mark Helfrich #16, which means they think he's going to have a lot of success at Oregon. That is understandable. Willie Taggart is next up. Butch Jones is in at #12. Kliff Kingsbury is 10. Colorado's new coach is 8. Mark Stoops at UK is 4th.  Before we find out where Tuberville ranks, SI's Stewart Mandel graded the new coaching hires. He gave out a lot of A's and B's. There was 1 C.  • Cincinnati: Tommy Tuberville, former Texas Tech head coach. A month ago I would have given this hire an A, but Tuberville's tenure so far has been littered with controversy, from the way he departed Lubbock to numerous committed Bearcats recruits saying the new staff cast them off. And it now seems Tuberville hightailed it out of Texas Tech to beat his boss to the punch. This will end poorly, probably with self-professed "hired gun" Tuberville jumping ship again. Grade: C   Now that is not a great grade. Mandel sees it as the worst hire and the worst fit. If you remember in the days after the hire, I talked to Matt Zemek of College Football News. Matt was not a fan. He said the following in the very first sentence:  It was the strongest negative reaction to any coaching hire in this year's cycle. It's one thing for Tennessee to hire Butch Jones, a man who may or may not turn out to be the bee's knees at a power-conference program. It's quite another thing for a program to hire a coach who is so clearly on the downside of his career, and to make that hire so quickly. Steve Addazio, the new Boston College coach, ranks at number 3. He's got a lot of work to do to turn that ship around. That leaves 2 spots open. You knew that Tuberville would rank low because the headline of this post says it. Number 2 is Scott Shafer at Syracuse. You know what this means. Of course you do, there are no more options left.  1. Tommy Tuberville, Cincinnati Wow, even we’re surprised to have Tubs all the way down at the bottom of this list. But you know it as well as we do: There’s nothing whatsoever about this man that says Cincinnati. And how can Bearcats fans trust him after the shocking abruptness with which he dumped Texas Tech? It’s been a long way down from 14-0 at Auburn. Something tells us there’s no going back. When Cincinnati hired Tommy T, I was surprised. I think I used the word surprised 149 times in the post about his hiring. As we've moved on and towards the season, I gotta say, I'm not fully on board. If you asked me during last season if I thought Tommy Tuberville was a good coach, I would have said no, it's not the mid 2000s anymore.  It's interesting what perception does to a person. If I was fully on board with Tubs, I would save all of these articles and make a point to look back at them in December when/if Cincinnati had a great season as a way to mock the so called experts. I'm not such an ardent hater of Tubs that I will point back at them in December and go "Look at this, Tommy T sucks."  Since I'm standing on the pier in between the Tommy Tuberville boat and the Tommy Tuberville sucks marina, these articles validate my insecurities of the Tuberville hiring. I seem to be in the minority with how Tommy T gets chants and standing ovations at basketball games. People are willing to buy in. That seems like an important thing to do. I'm still not sure of how much I like the move. That probably answers any and all questions if I like it or not.
