Last season, heading into training camp, Doug Baldwin was simply hoping to make the final roster.  Coming out of Stanford, it was easy to see that the young receiver was extremely talented, unfortunately, for his wallet, and fortunately, for the Seattle Seahawks, Doug didn’t have the “measurables”.

He’s not extremely fast, he is extremely short, and although he put up good numbers in college, teams were unsure how that would transfer to the NFL.

After the draft Doug Baldwin was a hot commodity.

I feel confident saying there are 31 other teams that wished they drafted Baldwin.

Though teams were unwilling to spend a draft pick in hopes his game would translate, many were willing to spend money to acquire him (in the form of a rookie free agent signing bonus, part of the undrafted free agent program of the new CBA).

What a difference a year makes

Seattle offered Doug a $17,500 signing bonus, and he took it.

What a steal for the Seahawks, not only was he the 41st ranked receiver by the end of the season, he also led Seattle in receiving yards.

I feel fairly confident saying there are 31 other teams that wished they had used a draft pick on him.  Baldwin former head coach at Stanford, current 49ers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh went as far as to admit it.

In an article on the Tacoma News Tribune’s website Eric Williams quoted Harbaugh:

“Well, I should have drafted him. . . Yeah, I’m kicking myself for not doing that.”

Richard Sherman and Doug Baldwin, teammates at Stanford, started a movement among the 12th man.  They called it “The revenge of the nerds”.  Between his play on the field, the creation of the nerds, and the ability to stay humble, Baldwin has quickly become a fan favorite.

Doug on Twitter

These days fans have a unique opportunity to interact with their favorite players via social media.  A rather large percentage of players interact with fans in some for or another.

Doug Baldwin (@DougBaldwinJr) takes it to another level.

During the offseason Doug Baldwin, Ricardo Lockette and Golden Tate took a group of fans from twitter out to lunch in Bellevue.  They even let the fans choose the restaurant.  The fans chose a local bar and grill, where the group hung out for a while.

There were plenty of smiles to go around that day.

Baldwin has some new teeth now. Rest assured he won’t miss a game.

The 2012 season has been anything but all smiles for Doug.  Sunday he caught only 2 passes for a total of 5 yards.  Even worse, he had 2 dropped passes on the Seahawks final drive.  The last of which, a potential game winning touchdown.

It would have been a great catch, had he come down with it.

He has the ability to come down with that ball, but was unable to make the play.

After Baldwin fell to the ground he rolled over, took off his helmet and it became evident that he was in pain.  After the game he tweeted:

“Preciate the support from everyone. Tough day. Better days to come tho. I’ll get some new teeth and we will be back smiling soon.”

At the time I was unsure if he actually broke his teeth or if it was just a metaphor in response to a forgettable performance.

Monday, I got my answer when he posted this photo on twitter.

It has been an extremely rough start to the season for Doug, and the Seahawks in general.  The season is young, the teeth are capped and Sunday brings new hope.

The Seahawks take on the Cowboys at CenturyLink Field and in the words of Doug himself “Today doesn’t care about what you did yesterday!”

Personally, I predict tomorrow will be a better day for all involved.
